The one that comes to mind immediately is Born in the U.S.A. The whole song moves me, every time I listen to it.

I had a brother at Khe Sanh
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

It both amuses and saddens me how often that song is mistaken for a pro-USA song. Was it Reagan who used it in his presidential campaign? And here at work, when this company was Daimler-Chrysler, the Chrysler side of the business had a promotional video using Born in the USA as the backing track.
When a song starts "Born down in a dead-man's town, the first kick I took was when I hit the ground", it's not going to be a song about how good it is to be an American...

And I'm surprised nobody's mentioned it, but Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah is nothing short of amazing.
Absolutely. Emotionally spine chilling and a truly great performance by a singer we lost way too soon.

And on a more intensely personal song, one of my all-time favorites as well -- Bonnie Raitt:

I Can't Make You Love Me

And I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something that it won't

You can see it in her face; you can hear it in her voice. This is a woman who has lived a lot of life.

Yep, she means it alright. Seems like she's been there. Very moving, actual chills.

The sentiment of that song is maybe one we can all relate to; been on the wrong side of things. But it does take a special performer to bring it out, to make it real, and I think it's usually the live stuff where you're most likely to find it.

The songs of Bacharach and David have always moved me, and this one in particular, the sentiment of this song always hits me where I live. A guy in this case, but it could easily be a girl, who doesn't know how to love.

It's been done by countless performers, but this live performance by Dionne Warwick seems to capture it well.

If only fools are kind, then I guess it is wise to be cruel

This is either the most brilliant thread ever or the most evil thread ever because it is the perfect distraction from query writing hell. Either way, I love it and I can't resist adding my own impossibly condensed list. (Now if only I could make that damn query so concise. Too bad I can't set it to music...)

Current listening:

"When You Are Smiling and Astride Me" by Father John Misty"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg4xkW2Zt5A

Quite possibly all-time favorite:

"Untitled" by Stellastarr*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwvLiTSU0SY

And of course:

"Twenty Four Hours" by Joy Division

not here, I swear
Seconding Bufty's Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends. Kris Kristofferson is an amazing songwriter.

I have a pretty, uh, singular taste in music. It's okay if you guys hate these songs. :)e2cry:)

This one pretty much almost makes me weep: The Last Time by Ten.

And another one... Get ready to weep.

BY FAR THE MOST MOVING SONG IN MY UNIVERSE...

Backstory here...

After being silent for 33 years about the pedophile who abused me when I was 11, I went to Ohio for what is called a WEEKEND OF RECOVERY retreat. It's put on by www.malesurvivor.org

There were about 30 men there with me...all from different parts of the Americas.

After arriving, we entered this huge round building where chairs were set in a circle. We were all TERRIFIED OUT OF OUR SKIN. Understand that this was, for most of us, the first time we dared to speak of our sexual abuse EVER.

I walked into the room and Mumford & Sons TIMSHEL began to play to usher us inside...

Cold is the water
It freezes your already cold mind
Already cold, cold mind
And death is at your doorstep
And it will steal your innocence
But it will not steal your substance

But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand

I could have died. I still tear up every single time I hear it. It takes my breath away...literally.

Not only is it an incredibly beautiful song, well performed...but it was hauntingly nail-on-the-head for ALL OF US.

I will never forget that moment in my healing journey. I have tears in my eyes just thinking about that song!

I still can't get through listening to "Winter" by Tori Amos without sobbing like mad.

I had to think long and hard on this because movement means a lot of things to me and not all of those various dimensions of movement are too often incongruous when putting them into music. There is the music that causes your feet to launch, buzzing with energy. There is the music that fixes stones of lead to the feet. There is the music that causes the body to list into a contortion in ponder.

And for something that strikes all three, that is rare. The song I would have to say that fits all three is "Dad" by Nomeansno.

Music is very important to my inner life. The best songs to me are the ones that move me and stick with me.

FEBRUARY SONG and TO WHERE YOU ARE, Josh Groban
STRANGER IN MY PLACE, Joan Baez
FIELDS OF GOLD, Sting
I WILL BE HERE, Steven Curtis Chapman
UNTIL I FIND YOU AGAIN, Richard Marx
AT SEVENTEEN, Janis Ian

I could go on. There are so many that speak to my heart.

"I'll Be Seeing You" by Jimmy Durante. It's after hearing it in "The Notebook", now I just can't hold my tears everytime I listen to it.
