Beta reader needed for a completed SF novel. Currently at 96K words. Looking for someone who pays attention to grammar (bane of my writing), clumsy writing, consistency (things which are capitalized which are then later not capitalized) and plot holes. More than willing to beta for anything good - except romance because I have no interest so I wouldn't beta that well. Please no time wasters!

The way I prefer to beta is like this: exchange 1-3 chapters, and give them a go over, so we know whether we're willing to work together. If we are, exchange either a few chapters at a time, or a whole manuscript - depending on what we agree on. I think this way is easier so we don't get lumped with a manuscript we're not particularly interested in.

Mine is close to a graphic novel or summer blockbuster: full of over-the-top characters, big speeches, action, and not designed to be taken seriously. It's not written to challenge views or change the world, just to provide a few weeks of fun. And it comes with a big twist towards the end for the extra bit of sneakiness. :)

Here's my in-the-works query:

Dark’s favourite propaganda line is “Strength through Socialism,” and it’s a line she swears to live and die by. Dark is a Snake: a state-sanctioned thug pumped full of steroids and mind-altering drugs. Her job is to chase down freethinkers and anyone who disagrees with the regime. But Dark likes to go one step further than meeting quotas. She likes to kill corrupt Snakes.

Sure, Dark knows what she’s doing is illegal, but it’s okay because she’s doing it for the good of the Party. That doesn’t mean there’s not a bullet waiting for her if she gets caught - a Snake-killer is still a Snake-killer in the Party’s eyes - but Dark's been trained to sacrifice herself for the Party. She dreams of performing the ultimate act of loyalty. Until a new gang starts spreading anti-Snake and anti-Party sentiments, catching Dark's attention in the process.

They call themselves Happy Rabbit. They want to make a bet. Whoever finds the other first gets to put a bullet between their eyes. Game on. To find Happy Rabbit, Dark enlists the help of drug dealers and prostitutes. Yet the closer Dark comes to catching Happy Rabbit, the more she regrets it.

And the more it looks like a trap.

RED SNAKE is a 96K word SF novel and has series potential.

Hey,

If you're interested in critiquing some horror/sci-fi short stories set during WW2, you can send me about 5Kish worth of chapters and I'll send you a short story of about 5K words and we can see if we like each other's feedback.

I'll be interested to see how you create characters we care about even if we don't take it too seriously.

If you're interested, you can send me your first few chapters to nickcarcano at gmail.com
