I live in New York City. I haven't heard anyone say "Howdy!" in a serious way--not as a joke or while posing as a cowboy--for eons. But I think the expression is still used commonly in other places in North America, and perhaps also in other English-speaking parts of the world. Any thoughts?

I still hear it occasionally here in Texas. I even say it occasionally. :)

I live in Denver.

People say "Howdy" in a non-ironic way just about every day.

My uncle answers the phone that way. At work.

I say it occasionally, but with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. :D

Can't say I've heard it used in Johannesburg. Well, there was one guy wearing a cowboy hat... but he was a second hand car salesman trying to give away a "Texas-sized discount" on a long-past-its-prime Jeep.

Yep. Y'all ain't gonna hear 'howdy' down here much. :)
