Needing inspiration, I turned to some of the books that have most shaped me. I have outgrown some of those books, I think, but here are a few that I still go back to:

T.S. Eliot- Four Quartets
Kathy Acker-Don Quixote (not the Cervantes version!)
Robert Penn Warren-All the King's Men
Jorie Graham-Any book of poetry
Toni Morrison-Jazz

I know a lot of people know it as a horror novel, but what sticks with me is the parts where he meditates on the nature of writing and how readers form attachments to characters that never existed off paper.
