Plus right now:

Poison and Wine- The Civil Wars
Porcelain- Lucy Schwartz

I have a hard time listening to anything with English lyrics while I write, so I listen to a lot of Explosions in the Sky, Gold Panda, and Sigur Ros. They're very inspiring musicians, by the way, and I highly recommend them for people writing adventure books in particular.

If I don't want to hear words, then the Lion King instrumental soundtrack is awesome.

If I DO want to hear words, then it's pretty much whatever pops up on my too-long writing playlist - Taylor Swift (lots of her songs), NEEDTOBREATHE, Lady A, Backstreet Boys (oh yeah), Boston, CSNY, the Shondels, Fleetwood Mac... as long as it isn't screamo, there's a good chance I'll listen to it.

I usually don't make playlists (though I listen to music whenever I write), but for some reason my latest WIP (high fantasy murder mystery!) just demands a playlist, and it's growing bigger every day. So far it looks a bit like this:

Magia - Kalafina
Rinbu Revolution - Masami Okui
Cave - Muse
Sis Puella Magica - Yuki Kajiura
The Last Thing On Your Mind - LIGHTS
You're Not Me - Marty Bags
Monsoon - Tokio Hotel
Everything You Want - Vertical Horizon
Lamento - Kanako Itou
The Key Of Light - Yoko Shimomura
Papercut - Linkin Park
Krwlng - Linkin Park

Yeah, lots of anime soundtrack music because I'm a nerd. uvu

This isn't the longest thread on soundtracks, but it is the most recent with actual playlists that I could find, so I'm bumping rather than starting a new one. Because I love a good playlist/soundtrack thread :D

For my current editing, I'm listening to two albums exclusively:
Highasakite's SILENT TREATMENT and
Ásgeir's IN THE SILENCE de luxe edition (with both the Icelandic and English versions of his songs)

For me, it depends on what story I'm working on, but I pretty much listen exclusively to soundtrack music. Beasts of the Southern Wild is a favorite of mine, as well as Jane Eyre and The Village. I feel like soundtracks are particularly great because they're written with story arcs in mind.

These playlists are epic! And proof that my compulsion to make a chapter-by-chapter playlist for my books is not so unusual. :)

The playlist for my current WIP includes a lot of Laura Marling, The Cinematic Orchestra, and guitar/string pieces.

I don't listen to instrumental pieces exclusively, but if a song has lyrics, the lyrics HAVE to fit the story or it creates too much mental dissonance.

I try not to listen to music while I actually write; I tend to think better without music playing. If I need an emotional boost or reminder or mood setter, i'll play it, listen, think and then go back to silence and write.

But when I break down and listen to music anyway (happens more often than not!), it's usually instrumental. I found some fascinating instrumental songs from Japan, actually, that i've come to love. Here are a few more recent ones:

"The Way" - Zack Hemsey
"March Slave, Op. 31" - Tchaikovsky
"Ichiban no Takaramono" - Angel Beats!
"Brave Song" - Angel Beats!
"Usan no Kaori" - Luck Ganriki

I like making instrumental soundtracks for my WIP. Makes me feel like it's already a movie. Vitamin String Quartet is great for this.

I usually listen to movie scores when I'm writing. I find something that matches the tone of the scene I'm working on. I find it helps the words flow! Recently I've been very attached to The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game scores.
