Yes - but especially when there's a character who literally has the power to revive the dead, getting killed isn't as much of a finality as it would otherwise suggest.

True, very true. I hadn't thought of that. Hmmm.... the possibilities there are endless! Damn, now I wish I hadn't been 2 minutes too late for her interview on Leno last night. Then again, I try to avoid spoilers like the plague.

And since Misty seems to really want some playmates, I imagine we'll be seeing a certain someone again soon. She's got the Stevie Nix-craft goin' for her.

I only watched an episode from the first season, and didn't like it, so I didn't watch the whole season. but when I started watching the second season I really loved it, brilliant writing compared to other drama series.
the current season is even better.

This is my favorite show right now. It's currently beating Walking Dead in my eyes. I adore these characters. It's rare for me to find a show where I find ALL the characters special and interesting. I also have always been into the occult and consider myself a bit of a witch, so this show is just like being spoon-fed my favorite candy for an hour. :)

I was wondering if Stevie Nicks was going to get thrown into the mix somehow... :D

I'm not going to post it here but the details of her episode were discussed by Ryan Murphy over at Entertainment Weekly. In regard to that episode plot, it's firmly in the 'please stop' category. And I mean that in a good way. When I first heard Stevie was coming to AHS I tried to think how she would fit in and of course this is the way she's going to fit in.

The love I have for this show (all three seasons) grows every year. I think it's the most fearless show on television.

Aaaaah! Finally got to catch up (I may or may not have binged 7 episodes in one day. Don't judge me!), and I love, love, love the Lange/Bates/Bassett thing. And I can't wait for December 4. :snoopy:

I like this season a lot.

CONS:

Two things I didn't like: Kyle getting molested and Queenie spreading her legs for a stranger Minotaur. What the hell was that? The writers did not do their jobs when they contrived a character so inhumanly desperate. That sort of depravity is rarely seen in everyday life. She was a beast. If they thought the sex was poetic they thought wrong. If she had been doing voodoo to rape racist Kathy Bates it would have been brilliant and naughty. But it had nothing to do with voodoo.

PROS

Very creative! Some scenes torment my mind on a deep psychological level. My primal fear of death ignites as I shudder with thoughts of such pain. It's sadism that works, I think. It helps me appreciate my own world for being safe. (safe for me so far I figure)

CONCLUSION

This season might challenge season one. When the daughter sees her dead body covered in maggots it is agonizing and inspiring. The conversation between burnface and his family and 3rd-degree burns forced me to feel raw and remorseful. Hopefully Murphy will dig deeper for scenes that break through. Hopefully he forgets the tortured horseman that geddyups the pathetic black girl.

Two things I didn't like: Kylie getting molesting and Queenie spreading her legs for a depraved Minotaur. What the hell was that? The writers did not do their jobs when they contrived a character so inhumanly desperate. That sort of depravity is rarely seen in everyday life. She was a beast. If they thought the sex was poetic they thought wrong. If she was doing voodoo to rape Madame, then that was brilliant and naughty. But I now know it had nothing to do with voodoo.

That episode was my favorite so far this season. I mean damn, they went there. It's the only show on television willing to take these risks.

Hopefully Murphy will search more for heightened moments and leave out the tortured horseman geddyuping the pathetic black girl.

The bolded part bothers me. You obviously know her name, Queenie, since you posted it above.

I said pathetic black girl to mock the way the show exploits the character.

Come on now. If you want to get offended you should first consider the obvious literary devices used and recognize the various uses of rhetoric infused through my review. Otherwise you are getting angry without ever trying to understand.

In your defense, you only said it bothered you. You didn't lash out. I can understand how my word choice was offputting. That is why I said it. Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, porn goes THERE even THERIER.

Porn takes RISKS even RISKIER. Just buzz words!

There are no fiction brownie points awarded just for tossing out edgy ideas. This is not kindergarden.

Ryan Murphy constantly tosses out raunchy characters and raunchy actions and arbitrarily vilifies them along the way. It makes his fiction so much less real. He is clearly an extremely creative man, but sometimes his belligerent and lazy (but mostly loud) attempts at characterization restrict his work from ever resonating in audiences' minds for generations.

I've seen a few hype outlets compare Ryan Murphy to Tennessee Williams. Hilarious! Comparing the characterization of Williams to Murphy is like comparing David Bowie to Lady Gaga, or Lou Reed to Justin Bieber.

Williams could say more about a character in a hundred words of dialogue than Murphy could in five hundred.

It's a good show. If Murphy doesn't change anything he'll still have a well-deserved prosperous career. But he won't ever threaten to enter that upper-echelon. Look at any of the many super creative and talented artists, both homegrown and splashed ashore America like an explosion in 1967 and learn about their career. Explore their discographies and filmographies. You'll see that the greats all wanted to get greater and greater with each new project, lifestyle, and vision. Some music artists attempted to chronicle every major spiritual or artistic change of their life!

So I'm just voicing out loud my hopes for Murphy's career.

Ryan Murphy is one of my favorite visions in television, up there with Joss Whedon. I'm not a fan of Glee, but Nip Tuck was amazing. I don't think it's fair to criticize the realness of these shows because it's fairly obvious he isn't going the realistic route.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is one of the best written pieces I have ever read (and seen on stage and screen) and I would never argue that Murphy could compare but they are vastly different.

Anyone make it through to the end?

I really enjoyed the final episode this season. In retrospect, I wish that the showrunners hadn't conflated so many storylines into one season -- witchcraft versus voodoo; witches versus witchhunters; witch versus witch. Much of the season was spectacularly over the top and then dropped (which seems to be the norm for AHS). But all in all, I enjoyed this season.

I burned out after about four episodes. Maybe five? When did the Council show up? That one. That's when I stopped watching. I just found out who the Supreme wound up being though, and was very politely trying to convey my utter lack of surprise to the fangirl who seemed so excited about the "twist." (I might be snarky when the situation calls for it, but I'm not one to harsh someone else's squee. That's just mean.) I think I said, "Oh, interesting. Y'know, I thought maybe that might happen on account of [insert obvious red herring here]."

Anywho. I'll probably finish it at some point--I do need to see Stevie Nicks' appearance--but I'm not that bothered. I need to get caught up on Hannibal.

Yeah, I wouldn't go so far as to say anything was surprising/shocking. Then again, we're writers, and we look for/anticipate surprises. :)

AHS has sort of become the "Let's take a bunch of interesting ideas and present them via attractive tableaux but never actually do much more than scratch the surface" show.

I'm still shaking my head over what Patti Lapone's character brought to the story. Or the witch hunters; they certainly weren't any sort of foil for the witches.

It did seem pretty reasonable to assume early on that Delia would be the new supreme.

Question: why did the character who a few moments before made Frankenkyle lick her shoe and choke his girlfriend suddenly become unable to save herself from getting choked to death?

And, Rhoda, Stevie Nicks performed three songs over the course of the season, but she was never able to top the awesomeness of Frances Conroy playing the theremin*.

*In fact, Conroy was the actress to beat this season. But, in true AHS fashion, not because of her acting chops, nor her character's storyline, but because she just looked fantastic doing whatever the hell they had her doing.

It was a very hot mess.

And I enjoyed it. I learned after a few episodes in season 1, that they won't wrap much up. They won't justify plot/character choices. They won't bother trying to make sense of things.

And once I kind of checked my brain at the door, I just went along for the ride.

The ending was not a huge surprise. Kind of a happy ending for a show like this.

Yeah, that was just so incredibly wrong!

But the only way to guarantee that a gal who's claim to fame was returning from the dead wouldn't, you know, return from the dead. **shrug** Didn't bother me; at that point, it was like DIBS ON WHO LIVES FOR REALZ.

Like CB said, as long as you don't actually try to logic it/point out its flaws, it was fun.

I finished out the season. Loved it, but my biggest problem was them leaving the situation with Misty completely unresolved. Are we supposed to believe she's just forever stuck in that hell world while the rest of the coven is going on to enjoy this happy new beginning? It would have been much better if they could have found some simple way of laying Misty to rest or saving her from that fate.

Yeah, I was satisfied with that either. Although, I wonder if when she "poofed," she was no longer in that hell. Just failing to return from it meant she failed the test (and perished). Not sure it meant she was stuck in that particular place. At least, that's what I want to think.

Seriously, Misty was the least deserving of any of the characters this season, to end up with that fate. I too turned my brain off when watching this show halfway through the first season. The lack of continuity can be jarring otherwise. Still, it's one of my favorite shows on television because of the batshittery of it all.
