The setting for my story is an alternate universe where instead of the French Revolution starting in 1788 it's bumped up 200 years later to 1988. I still want to include some modern versions of some of the events that took place (Taking the Bastille, October Riots etc.) I'd like to know if this is breaking any sort of rule with this genre?

It would definitely be alternate-history, because pretty much everything that happened in Europe & the places that interacted with Europe (i.e. everywhere) after the French Revolution was either a result (direct/indirect) of the French Revolution or strongly affected by consequences of the French Revolution. I'm curious about your alternate timeline!

It might not be the most plausible but a lot of mainstream AH rarely is, sounds interesting!
