AW Photography Thread

That is a great shot of the moon. I always struggled with that. I got one from the top of the Empire State Building a few years back and was surprised it turned out so well given the conditions. But then in other situation which I thought where much better, I have struck out. I know there is a technique and I did know it at once stage but the most recent time I tried to replicate it I got nothing.



I probably could have cropped it. Oh well.

This is my favourite related night shot:

If I recall correctly it was a 12 minute exposure. The streaks are the stars, the movement of the Earth is making the stars pass through the sky.




That shot of yours with your daughter(?) and the horse is great. A keeper for sure.

Part of my first photo assignment. It was supposed to be a still life or something, in black and white.


And this is part of my final. I decided to do macro shots of random shit I had in my backpack.

We had to print them, too. All of these were shot with an olympus pen e-pl1. I want a better camera, but I don't have the money for one yet.

I wish I could find my favorite shots, but they're on another drive that I'm too lazy to dig out.

Those are great, though I feel that there is supposed to be a theme and I am missing it?

What is wrong with the Oly? What does it not do?

No theme, really. Just stuff I had around.

I just wish the Olympus had less expensive lenses with wider f-stop range and cleaner shots.

I'm just about to buy a Samsung WB150F - does anyone own one or know what they are like? I use my camera for multiple purposes, so I need one that's a good all-rounder. I like the fact it has wi-fi, so I can instantly upload photos to my computer and/or social networking sites.

How did you get the moon shot? Tripod? Long exposure? Telescopic lens?

I'm still in the process of getting a good camera. They're expensive! Right now I'm only using a Kodak point and shoot 12 MP camera I got a few years back for Christmas. I like doing outdoor photography - I love taking hikes and being anywhere in nature, so taking pictures of it is just an extension!

Stew21 - love the black & white of the kiddos.

Film vs digital: Right now I'm doing a lot more digital. I can see right away what the pic looks like and change settings or just take another if I don't like what I see. Also, I find I'm more likely to play and have gotten some shots I wouldn't have even tried with film. But sometimes film just has something digital just can't quite duplicate. As for the camera, I've learned you can take lousy shots with a good one & great shots with a point & shoot - it definitely takes an eye & practice.

Upping the thread - I'm new here. I love taking photos (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150, a 12.1Mp camera. I travel to Ireland, Scotland and England, and am going to Iceland this summer. I sell the photos at art shows in the summer, which pays for the trips, and then some.

Most of them aren't posted as individual photos on my website, so I'm linking them to where they happen to appear. I don't have access to photo sites at work

If any of you are ever in Tucson, Arizona and have the time, check out the Center for Creative Photography, on the UofA campus in downtown Tucson.

I keep meaning to stop in, and finally did so on Saturday. A companion and I decided the Tucson Festival of Books was too large, too noisy, and not focused that much on books. Walking back to the parking garage, we realized the Center was on the way - and open. Right now there is a gorgeous exhibit of astronomical photography and video. They also have an archive open to browsing and study, with advance registration.

So newspapers don't let their photographers use film, huh? So, what is that supposed to mean to the unwashed masses, myself included? Oh, yeah, did you know 95 percent of kiddy porn photographers use digital cameras? So what does that mean?
Arizona Highways magazine, known for its fine photographs, still used 4x5 FILM.
Digital is quick. So is McDonalds. So what? Real riters don't gum up their brains with vapid generalizations that mean nothing.

I've been here a long time and just discovered this thread!

I'm a fine art photographer. I use these days mostly digital but I started out with b&w film and a darkroom. I've always loved b&w film more (don't hit me!) and that's really where my passion is. I've had to take a long hiatus for health reasons and I'm now just starting working with it again. I especially love b&w infrared and have been experimenting with digital infrared using a converted DSLR.

I have something like 12 cameras, mostly film. I even have a twin lens reflex which is really cool, and an old 1950s era Argus that takes beautiful pictures. And an old SX-70 polaroid that's as old as I am.

I studied photography in college and that's where all the artsy came from. We learned so many cool things like toning, handcoloring, using the famous Holga camera, polaroid transfers (which I continued to do until about 8 years ago -- the film is SO expensive!). I love experimenting!

I also taught photography classes at our local college for awhile. Most of it was digital. I couldn't get them to let me teach a darkroom course.

Interesting about the digital vs film thing. I think they both have their uses, and one is not superior to the other. I've been hired to do weddings, and I would use digital hands down. (But, just to be artsy, I would sneakily take some b&w film photos too.) When I was in college 20 years ago (gulp), digital was just starting to come around. I wrote an article about how darkroom was dying. There were very few photo stores around where I live that sold darkroom equipment then. Now there are none. I have to get my stuff online. The one photo store I frequented is now a portrait studio, and the other is out of business. It's very sad. But that's what happens with technology. Things become obsolete.

I don't think I'll ever stop using film and a darkroom. For me, it's pure magic, and there's an art to it that you can't really get with digital. Just my opinion, of course.

I just realized we had a photography thread, and I have a photography question if anyone happens by and would be kind enough to offer an opinion....

So my mother passed away several years ago, and while cleaning out her things, I took possession of ten or so disposable cameras. My living situation at the time forced me to also store them for a while, and now, I've come across them again.

Given that my mother is no longer with us, I really would like to get these cameras processed in hopes that there might be pictures of her none of us has ever seen. However, all of these cameras are badly expired, some by 20 years. I realize most, if not all, of the photos will either have major issues or not develop at all.

All I know to do with disposable cameras is to take them to the lab at, say, Walgreen's or Wal-Mart and see what can be done.

Is there anything else that I could do with these cameras that would increase my odds of getting better/more pictures out of them than just taking them to the pharmacy? Or would the process of developing them be the same anywhere (with anyone)?

Well, if the film is 20 years old, there will be defects in it, but it'll still be recognizable, I think. Film processing is dying as it is, so my only advice is to see what you can find as far as a photo lab is concerned -- like, within a camera store or maybe an independent if it exists. You can explain the situation and see if they'd be able to do anything in processing to help.

(Typically photo labs in Walmarts, etc have a standard processing they do for anything and everything. Same with b&w, if they exist. Which is why I started developing my own b&w film. I do not do color, unfortunately.)

Either way, you should get something out of them.

(I once found my grandfather's old b&w negatives and printed some pictures from them. It was a bit eerie, b/c he is deceased, and I didn't take them, but they turned out good. The negs had to be at least 50 years old at the time. I do not know if color negs keep that long.)

I always shied away from photography because of the costs of developing films - so digital was a great invention for me. I used to have a small Cannon, but some months ago I got some money I had already thought would never be paid and decided to invest in a Nikon D3200. I love it, but am still learning how to get the most of it.

Starting to get back into photography now I've upgraded my camera (from a Canon 350D to a 70D).

Discovered there's a barn owl that hunts in the fields a little way from where I live. My couple of nights trying to photograph him have taught me that owls are hard.

Hi Jimmy, that's an amazing photo. We have a barred owl somewhere in our woods, but I've only ever seen him in the deep, snowy winter. Congrats on the capture.

I need advice on a camera purchase. I take mostly macro photos and back in the day I was comfortable with a couple of Pentax SLRs with a trunk full of lenses, adapters, tripods, etc. Right now I am using a Panasonic DMC-ZS1, Lumix. I only bought it because a man taking pictures in a butterfly zoo in Florida recommended it to me when I asked him about digital cameras. He wrote the specs on a paper and I bought it that week. I like the camera fine. It takes good pictures for a view finder set up but I am wondering if I shouldn't buy something more advanced. Now that I am retired I would like to get back into photography. Advice? Product recommendations? --s6

Thanks, although I'm not sure I agree!

I don't really have the equipment to capture a decent owl pic. This is my 300mm lens, the biggest I have, at full zoom, and I've cropped the shot to something like 10% of its size to centre on the owl. Also, the approaching dusk forced me to 3200 ISO, which is why it looks so grainy.
