Starting can be really easy. The first "pillow" I had was a square of that solid pink insulating board covered in a pillow case. I bought a large box of large-headed pins and some inexpensive bobbins. Lacis sells inexpensive bobbins.

I started because knitting and crocheting were too hard to the ends of my fingers and for bobbin lace I can use my whole hand to move the bobbins. Plus, the lace is gorgeous.

My current pillow is similar. Blue construction foam with an pillowcase over it.
My husband was a darling and made me a few dozen bobbins on his wood lathe as a Christmas present.
I just finished my first project. A pair googly-eyed bookmarks for my nieces.
I might have to buy a few bobbins online in the future. Making enough to do larger patterns on the lathe would be a pain.
