Spellbound - Children's Fantasy E-zine [2.5 cent / word; $20 / poem]

Spellbound was a fantasy magazine for kids I ran years and years ago. We've been running a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the first year's production and have just made our goal so I get to announce the guidelines now!

The short of it is: We'll be opening to submissions July 1, 2012 for the first issue (Rings & Other Magic Things for Winter 2012). Looking for short stories up to 2,500 words and poems and paying 2.5 cents / word and $10 for poems under 8 lines, $20 for poems 8 lines and over. (Updated.)

I've only had a chance to post the guidelines at the Kickstarter page. Official pages on the Eggplant website will come later in the month.

We're super excited to get this publication off the ground again!

Hi Roach,

Congratz on reaching your goal. I might have an appropriate poem or two. Let us know when your official website is up and I'll pass the info on to some colleagues.

I didn't notice a specific age group for the reader on the Kickstarter site. Do you have one in mind?

I was also wondering about the age group you were looking for. I'm working on something I'd be interested in submitting, but I want to make sure it's appropriate.

Don't have anything to submit at the moment but as a mom and big-time fantasy fan, I'll be keeping an eye on your magazine. I hope it sticks around a while, as my little guy is still too young for it.

Interesting magazine, maybe you'll get all the Harry Potter fans to enjoy your magazine.
Good Luck, and it's always nice to know when another market for children's literature comes along.

Hi Roach,

I'm glad to see you are up and running. I just sent a poem. Do you have any idea of your response time? I'm assuming a few weeks after the reading period ends. Thank you for considering my work.

Hi Debbie!

The response times are going to vary, I think. I know that our art director, Sam, has already gotten in touch with some authors. I have just tonight started reading fiction submissions. I'm not sure what Marcie (the poetry editor) is looking at for response times, though I remember from the last time around that she usually waited until the end of the reading period before passing on acceptances to me.

I think it's a safe bet to not expect responses until after the reading period ends.

Thanks! I didn't see the posting the first time around, but this looks like fun.

The first issue looks great - love the artwork and poetry. I haven't gotten to read the stories yet, but I will.

And one last bump before the reading period ends. Marcie, the poetry editor, wants me to clarify what we mean by "changelings" She's been getting a lot of submissions about shape changers.

What we are looking for are stories and poems that touch upon changelings--as in the creatures left by the fae in place of a human child--and doppelgangers--as in a supernatural double of a living person.

Thanks and happy holidays!

Giving this thread another bump. We released our second issue last month and are now reading for the Fall 2013 issue. The theme is Creatures of the Deep, Dark Woods.
