Venham daí lusitanos, residentes em terras lusitanas, aqueles the falam a nossa bela língua. Brazileiros também serão bem-vindos, pois então!

Thanks for the help, Sara!

Aqui vais encontrar informação do melhor.

Sou inglesa e faço muitas asneiras quando escrevo (how many have I made so far, Sara?). Boa ideia um "thread" em portugues.

Eu escrevo - but not in Portuguese!

At least I don't know any.

Obrigado!

The reason I wanted these words is that I'm trying to remember a conversation I had with a group of women, long ago on a Brazilian Amazon boat. I spoke English and a bit of Spanish, the women only spoke Portuguese; and yet I understood what they were saying quite well.

The gist of what they were saying is that they were amazed that I was travelling alone, without a brother, a father, or a husband; that I was not married yet and didn't have a fiance; that my father allowed me to go off alone like that; and they were offering me their own sons and brothers in marriage!

I'm writing this scene for a memoir, and I wanted to see if it is crediblle for me, knowing only Spanish, to understand what they were saying; and indeed, it is. Many of the words/expressions are very similar.

I don't know wha I was worried about. After all, I DID underrstand them at the time!

Really nice and helpful thread, Sara. My novel doesn't need Portugese, but I sure know where to go for help if my next novel does.

Oi pessoal!
Pensei em colocar "he smells like the woods".

Desculpar meu Português, I have a long way to go with that. :)
I would use forrest rather than woods. I'd avoid pine forrest, or worse, pine scent, that would be a bit of a cliché I think.

Apenas meus dois centavos. :)

Podes usar woodsy, por exemplo:

He had a woodsy scent.

He smelled of wood and resin and moss.
