My goal is 125, so I'm just barely on track. Unfortunately, I'm reading 5 books and am in the beginning of all of them.

In this batch, I apparently like titles that begin with "The." Note that two of these are novellas.

I managed another 14 in June thanks to a weekend break and some extra long commuting for work. It's a bit more of a mix this time as I slipped between genres although crime retains a special place in my brain. At this rate I'll hit the 100 by the beginning of August, which should leave me able to hit my 150 target (all things going well).

59. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

60. Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor.

61. When Mr Dog Bites by Brian Conaghan.

62. Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi.

63. Thirteen by Tom Hoyle.

64. One Kick by Chelsea Cain.

65. The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton.

66. Ketchup Clouds by Annabel Pitcher.

67. Butter by Erin Lange.

68. Dead Ends by Erin Lange.

69. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell.

70. Three Graves Full by Jamie Mason.

71. The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith.

72. The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks.

I forgot all about updating, but I'll try to remember some of what I've read so far in 2014:

6. The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood *****
7. A Man Came out of a Door in the Mountain by Adrianne Harun **
8. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ***
9. Astonish Me by Maggie Shipstead *****
10. Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead **
11. Redeployment by Phil Klay *****
12. The Elite by Kiera Cass **
13. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes *
14. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy ****
15. A Dance With Dragons by George RR Martin ***
16. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens ****
17. In The Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick ***
18. To Siberia by Per Petterson **
19. beta read
20. Cinder by Marissa Meyer *

I know I've read more books but I can't remember what they were! I guess I'll update as they come back to me. I'm aiming for 50 this year... 100 just isn't going to happen, sadly.

My next fifteen, taking me to half of Sage's total :)

I was going to list these five at a time as usual, redacting the titles on the BFS Awards shortlists I was a juror for (Best Fantasy Novel and Best Anthology). But since the shortlist is public, I just waited until I'd read them all to list them.

21. Rustblind and Silverbright edited by David Rix (anthology)
22. Crimewave 12: Hurts edited by Andy Cox (actually a magazine I subscribe to, but as it has a ISBN I'm counting it as an anthology)
23. The Tenth Black Book of Horror edited by Charles Black (anthology)
24. Pantomime by Laura Lam (YA novel)
25. End of the Road edited by Jonathan Oliver (anthology)
26. A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar (novel)
27. Dangerous Gifts by Gaie Sebold (novel)
28. Tales of Eve edited by Mhairi Simpson (anthology)
29. The Glass Republic by Tom Pollock (YA novel)
30. Between Two Thorns: Book I of The Split Worlds by Emma Newman (novel)
31. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (novel)
32. Fearie Tales: Stories of the Grimm and Gruesome edited by Stephen Jones (anthology)
33. Blood and Feathers: Rebellion by Lou Morgan (novel)
34. A Man from Elsewhere by James [J.G.] Farrell (novel)
35. Red Shift by Alan Garner (YA novel, reread)

I've started a J.G. Farrell reading project, and for the rest of the year have a lot of novels, collections, anthologies and novellas I've had to put aside during my BFS Awards jury duties.

I managed 14 books in July, mostly adult fiction but a fair number of YA too. I'd hoped to hit the 100 by now but it's now looking like it will be the end of this month. Still, not bad going given that I didn't hit 100 at all last year.

73. Fangirl: A Novel by Rainbow Rowell.

74. Landline by Rainbow Rowell.

75. Who Framed Klaris Cliff? by Nikki Sheehan.

76. Last To Rise by Francis Knight.

77. Rumpole Of The Bailey by John Mortimer.

78. The Trials Of Rumpole by John Mortimer.

79. Rumpole’s Return by John Mortimer.

80. Purity by Jackson Pearce.

81. Love Like Blood by Marcus Sedgwick.

82. The Year Of The Rat by Clare Furniss.

83. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.

84. The Queen Of The Tearling by Erika Johansen.

85. Heretic by Sarah Singleton.

86. Tomorrow And Tomorrow by Thomas Sweterlitsch.

A nasty (and, it seems, on-going bout of food poisoning) wiped out my commute, ensuring that I fell just shy of the magic 100 in August. (Honestly, I think I was more upset about that than the food poisoning itself). Tally for the end of August was an agonising 98:

87. Sorcery & Cecelia (Or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot) by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer.

88. Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes.

89. The Last Telegram by Liz Trenow.

90. Kill Your Boss by Shane Kuhn.

91. Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls by David Sedaris.

92. The Cormorant by Chuck Wendig.

93. Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire.

94. The Poppy Factory by Liz Trenow.

95. Picture Me Gone by Meg Rosoff.

96. Shovel Ready by Adam Sternbergh.

97. My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish – Any Fin Is Possible by Mo O’Hara.

98. Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith.

Next five, putting me ten short of my goal of fifty for the year.

36. The Lung by James [J.G.] Farrell (novel)
37. Cold Turkey by Carole Johnstone (novella)
38. The Night is for Hunting by John Marsden (YA novel)
39. The Other Side of Dawn by John Marsden (YA novel)
40. The Race by Nina Allan (novel)

That concludes my reading of John Marsden's Tomorrow series. I will go on to The Ellie Chronicles, though probably next year. Next up is a YA, Emily Danforth's The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which I picked for now as I have a four-hour train journey tomorrow and that would be a good time to get a jump-start on a novel that's just over 140,000 words. After that, the next Farrell, A Girl in the Head.

(Really late for this ;))
-Jeff Deaver - The Bone Collector
-Michael Connelly - The Closers, The Narrows, City of Bones, Lost Light (best crime writer ever)
Jeff Lindsay - first three in a Dexter series (it gets a bit repetitive when you're reading them back-to-back.)
-James Patterson - Came Along a Spider, one about women solving crimes series, don't remember the title (it was so lazily written)
-Chris Carter - Night Stalker
-numerous Meg Cabot
- Fifty Shades (Well, half of it. Still don't understand what made it such a hit.)

Next five, and while I have a couple of lengthy adult novels coming up (The Luminaries, The Goldfinch) I should definitely pass fifty for 2014.

41. The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth (YA novel)
42. A Girl in the Head by J.G. Farrell (novel)
43. How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World: A Short History of Modern Delusions by Francis Wheen (non-fiction)
44. After the Party by Lisa Jewell (novel)
45. Giving Up the Ghost: A Memoir by Hilary Mantel (non-fiction)
