"Slight" is right. I do not feel the least bit slighted.'Equally enjoyable is the extremely slight 'Kulturkampf' by Anatoly Belilovsky which casts Wagner as a conquering general, duelling rival armies through the playing of orchestral symphonies and operas.'
This is, hands down, the best Cast of Wonders yet. The story was whimsical and engaging with a glossy shine of history, and the sound production was just AMAZING. At first I was a bit concerned the music was too loud in comparison to the narration, but as I continued listening I realized how central the music was to the story itself, especially as the warring pieces overlapped each other.
Another thing I really liked is this story plays to multiple levels of listener. A younger audience will appreciate the delicious accent and the familiar tunes*. But the story truly sparkles for listeners with an ear for classical music and/or a love of musical history. As a classical percussionist, I laughed out loud at the term "tympan-fuhrer", and Wagner's well-known arrogance rang through!
Beautifully done! I will definitely listen to this one over and over again. "Must be an Austrian." *chuckle*
Bravissimo!
