This is a "how to" guide to downloading, installing and setting up IceChat (a client for accessing the chat) It involves instructions in relation to #absolutewrite and #thewriterscircle

Open this website: http://www.icechat.net/site/downloads/download.php

Scroll down to: “IceChat Full Install” or click this link - ( http://www.icechat.net/site/downloads/download.php?did=1 )

Click allow on any error messages that might appear.

Click on “run”, “Yes” or “allow” if a security warning comes up.

Close all other open applications once set up opens

“welcome to Ice chat” click Next>

“Information” Click Next>

“Select Destination Location” Leave as default and click Next>

“Select Components” Choose if you want emoticons or extra languages (if not unselect the applicable box)

“Select Start Menu Folder” Leave as default and click Next>

“Select Additional Tasks” Choose if you would like IceChat to appear on your desktop for easy access or not. (Unselect “Create a desktop icon” if you don’t want it on your main screen) and click Next>

“Ready to Install” click Install

It is now installing.

“Information” Read through if you want, otherwise click Next>

“Completing the IceChat set up” Click Finish

In the start menu/on the desktop find the IceChat logo and open.

Now Icechat will run you through its set up process.

It will ask for your nickname. Then Click on the green arrow.

“Sever name” In the box type in “irc.starchat.net”

Done! Click on the green forward arrow.

It will open up the icechat “console” You’ll note that there is several different servers under “favourite Servers” I would personally right click on each of the server names (other than starchat) and delete from them before moving on. And click on “yes” in the pop up window if you do plan on deleting the excess servers.

Highlight irc.starchat.net and click on “connect” down the bottom of your screen. Allow any firewall messages that might pop up.

In the top bar click on “view” and right down the bottom click on “Channel List” which will open another menu click on “favourite channels”

This will open the “favourite channels box on the left hand side of your screen, down the bottom click on “Add” and type in “#absolutewrite” sans quotation marks and click on “OK” do the same for “#thewriterscircle”

Now, click “#absolutewrite” and click “join” down the bottom; do this with “#thewriterscircle” as well.

You are now connected to #absolutewrite chat room!

TO AUTO JOIN!!!!
Important if you don’t want to manually connect to the server every time you open up IceChat!

Click on “Favourite Servers” on the left of your screen. Right click on “irc.starchat.net” and click on “Edit server” (under options on the left hand side of the dialog window) click on “startup” and select the box labelled “Auto-Connect on IceChat Startup”

If you have registered your username type it into the box labelled “Nickserv password”

Click on “Autojoin list” (Under options on the left hand side of the dialog window) and click the box at the top (on the left of the button labelled “add”) and type in #absolutewrite and click “add” do the same with #thewriterscircle and any other channels you want to join.

Finally click “save”

Next time you open up IceChat you should automatically connect to the server and your selected rooms!

Happy chatting!

Thanks, Miah!

I use mIRC, so if anyone needs help with it, that's another resource.

I'm going to give the disclaimer that #thewriterscircle is NOT affiliated with Absolute Write and Absolute Write is not responsible for anything that may occur. Any problems that occur in there can be addressed to the Chat Owner (AW member IOTrackers) or on of TWCs chat operators. (yes, there is some overlap).
