you martyr and shine.
Still nothing more than victim blaming. "Too lazy" "not reading instructions."

Yep. The blame lies squarely with the hackers, as well as every single person who clicks to view the shared NOYB images online. Shame on them, all the way to hell and back. I'm saving my scorn for the perpetrators, and the people blaming the victims.

It's not your fault if your bank account gets hacked and you won't be shamed for that. But if your nudie images get hacked, you're apparently an idiot?

Public, maybe (I would disagree), but I don't know of anyone who's said it's less wrong when they are female.

Fair enough. I probably said female because when I see these stories, it's usually female celebrities who were targeted by the hackers.

Can you clarify what you're disagreeing with re: "public"?

I mean I would disagree that being public figures makes them fair game.

NOYB?

People get blamed for getting hacked all the time.

I don't know how many hacking-related articles you generally read, but most of the ones I read, no matter what the data is, if you didn't protect it well enough, there are always commenters blaming you for not being more tech-savvy.

I don't think that's right, but it happens regardless of whether it's a nude selfie or financial info, whatever.

Heck, people call people idiots for getting viruses.

NOYB = "None Of Your Business."

We don't know how much encryption the owner of the hacked account attempted to use. Unless her password was 123password or she posted it on social media, she's really not to blame. Same goes for victims of other kinds of hacking. I'd rather the focus of scorn be placed where it belongs: on the hackers (and those who view the fruits of hacking).

Oh, okay. When I say "those same people" ... I didn't phrase myself very well. What I really meant was that I feel like I see more people arguing that it's justifiably criminal to view child pornography than not. But I feel like I see more people victim blaming or just being very casual when sexual images of an adult are distributed without permission. (But not necessarily either of those things in this thread or on this forum.)

I feel like that's true. I think when we had the thread about the heartbleed exploit a while back, there were plenty of advice posts on how not to be affected by it, along with posts about passwords and not using certain services...

I think maybe it's perception? People feel badly for someone who gets their identity stolen but not so badly for naked celebrities?

I agree they're not to blame.

My only point is I disagree that the victim blaming in this regard is specific or unique to nude photos of women.

I believe I've noticed a distinct undercurrent of people thinking the fact that nude pictures existed in the first place makes the victims idiots and with this leak they just got what they deserved.

Definitely. There are enough women who would never take any nude pictures that you get the holier-than-thou ones acting like having any is a moral failure. Then the typical male version of that sounds a lot like having nudes means 'asking for it', whatever 'it' happens to be.

It doesn't seem to matter to either group that someone's private photos are absolutely none of their business, even when they get stolen. The women shouldn't have to explain their motivations or password strategies or anything about the pics, imho.

No, they shouldn't. I still reserve the right to not understand why they had them there in the first place.

The creepiest thing to me is that some of the images are several years old, suggesting if they really did come from the same hack, whoever did the hack could've been spying on some of these accounts for years.

Oh, yeah. And people are going to talk about their thoughts, too, which is normal enough. But it does bug me that the slut-shaming is so strong on something like boudoir photos. I do hate to hear that line of thought expressed so widely. I don't think it should be such a big deal that way.

Not if the pictures had been there for years but the hack just happened.

It's possible, but iCloud only stores the last 1000 photos, if that's indeed where they came from.

I'm probably an outlier, but I probably haven't taken more than 50 pictures with my phone.
