So apparently a red fox has been inhabiting the grounds around the White House since last fall. He's been spotted numerous times and photographed a few times.

He's been marking territory, eating vegetables from First Lady Michelle Obama's garden, setting off the odd alarm, and eluding capture.

The Secret Service won't talk about the nature of the alarms he sets off nor of their responses, which is only reasonable.

(The Wall Street Journal broke the story, but they have an online paywall which makes linking to their stories an exercise in futility.)

Urban foxes are pretty smart in my experience. And difficult to catch without a pack of dogs and a lot of fields.

The fox has every right to be there.

That's one handsome critter. Maybe he'll find a ladyfriend (and from that picture, definitely a he) and make an urban fox family.

If our nation's capital were out west, they'd likely get coyotes instead, though we have foxes out here too.
