I saw that on the Aerodrome forum as well. Excellent. Good way to begin the 100th anniversary of the conflict.

We have a transcript of my husband's grandfather's WWI diary. He enlisted as soon as the US declared war. He was a tiny man, so they assigned him to drive ambulances. The main thing I noted (besides his getting the 1918 influenza in 1919 while he was still in France) was his complaint about the lack of blankets. He didn't write much about what he actually saw. And I'm told that although he had a sharp mind to the day of his death (at age 98), his memory suffered right after the war. He had made it a practice to erase from his mind the horrors he witnessed daily...and he had a hard time resuming normal memory function when he got back.
