A lot of crime novels. The protag's girlfriends/paramours frequently get knocked off along the way. It almost seems like a cliche.

It isn't nearly as cliche as girlfriend/paramour doesn't get knocked off, and they live happily ever after.

To be sure. And even if the former is a cliche it can still work fine for me. Same with the later. HEA. It's really comes down to the way the author puts it all together. If they get the characters and settings right then the novel will most likely still be enjoyable.
