Illustrators?

Do writers chose their own illustrators, or are they assigned by a publishing house? Does anyone who works with children's books know much about how to start as an illustrator? Do Illustrators have book agents in the same way as writers do? Thanks!

And there's a sticky note right at the top of this page that will answer your questions about illustrators called: Children's Writers: You Don't Hire the Artist.

The sticky notes in each forum are there because they're full of great information and common questions people ask. Those should be the first place you go in each topic. They're great and you can post in them to resurrect any of the conversations at any time. That way, you don't have to wait for responses, either. You can read it all at once.

I second everyone's opinions and I'll add one other thing. The large majority of publishing houses like to hire their own illustrators except in the case of an author/illustrator. In those cases, the author is the illustrator and does his/her own artwork. Check out the "Children's Writers and Illustrators Market Guide" on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or any other book-buying site. Good luck!
