Forgive me if this is already addressed, but I just started my Facebook page after resisting it for all this time.

Now I have a page. Now what? Is there like a homepage I can look at that has everything laid out in front of me (like myspace)? How do I see other people's Facebook pages? What do I do with it? I've heard that having a Facebook page can help me network to find a new job. Or having my books listed somehow will help people find them better?

I'm totally new at this, so I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

You don't have a space for comments, you have a "wall" for comments. If you reply to a post on your wall, you type "wall to wall". Anytime you do anything ... comment on a picture, on someone's status, etc, your friends see it on a news feed and of course you see what THEY do as well. That's how interaction happens.

There's some cool tools for adding facebook friends (it'll go get your outlook/yahoo/gmail/hotmail/msn contacts and see if they have a facebook account).

There's also groups you can join (there's an AW group btw) and can comment within the group and interact with others that way.

If you're used to Myspace, facebook takes a bit getting used to. The best way I found was to get some friends and figure it out slowly.

And don't feel obligated to take part in every single invitation you get.

I found it took a bit of getting used to as well. It feels to me like people are a little more social there (as opposed to myspace). Again, that might have to do with the applications (read: games).

Nav, you're on facebook? Can I 'friend' you?

It took me ages to finally give into Facebook. But, now that I have.... I like it much better than Myspace. It's more private, but at the same time more social. Less clutter, less Egocentrism, less judgemental and "tweeny."

I'm still getting used to it, but I'm enjoying it so far!

I deleted my facebook page 'cause I just. Wasn't. Getting it.

I no longer have myspace, Bebo, anything like that. I'm on AW, and I have a blog. Apart from that, I prefer to keep in touch with friends by...well, talking to them.

Strange, huh?

Talk to people like, face to face??? Scarlet's weird... ;)

just kidding :D

I have Facebook (do you have it or do you do it??) I have MySpace. I like Facebook a lot better, but I get bombarded with requests (most are just silly fun, but silly in a good way). You can set it so only friends can see your info - which I like - or you can set it so anyone can see it. It seems really daunting at first, but it isn't once you start putzing around with it.

Come - friend me. I like friends.

ETA - I just realized my link only goes to the main Facebook page. **Sigh** I'm a dolt sometimes. **mutters to self as she stomps off**

Until you have friends signed up, Facebook is a confusing blank. Once you have some people hooked up, you get to see everyone's status, comments and activities in a weird list of gobbledygook.

After a while, it should start to make sense. You add comments, pictures, everyone is notified. You can popup live chats with friends who are currently logged in.

Sometimes it seems great, sometimes it seems like a huge waste of time. Weird.

Probably best to avoid most of the applications, since there's a huge grey area where "developers" can keep copies of your user data and list of friends. They're mostly lame and not worth the trouble. Nice concept, though.

I'm addicted to Facebook. I joined it about a year after the site was launched when it hit campus and spread through like wildfire. It's changed a great deal since then...

One thing I'd recommend though is to try not to clutter your Facebook pages with applications. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of them--some of cool, but others don't really function all that well.

But it's a great place to join groups (I'm a fan of Vera Bradley items and I find out a great deal of information from the fan page on Facebook). I have to admit I'm probably a little more addicted to it than I should be...

I've already got the facebook thing going, and the first thing that happened was this sudden massive flood of friend requests. Where did they all come from? I knew a bunch were from AW, but how did the AW crowd find me so fast? And where did all those other people come from? I started clicking on the "friend request" buttons for each, but there were so many that I had to stop. Plus, I didn't recognize most of the names.

What is up with that?

The answer may lay in this post:

Hey, Allen, I friended you and added a zillion potential friends (all of which are from here!)

:D Plus, it comes up with a list of people you may know because they are friends of friends.

I've been posting a few things on my "wall" on facebook and still am poking around, learning things. For some reason someone "kidnapped" me and I really don't know why, nor do I really want to play that game.

I put up a photo avatar, one that is unique, I think. I didn't want to do the usual face shot, and I thought it was silly to put me holding one of my books or standing in front of a bookshelf (Hey look at me, I'm a writer!) so I found picture of me sitting on a horse from when we took a horseback ride on a cattle ranch from our trip to Maui last year. Maybe that's silly, I don't know. I just thought it was neat.

I agree with you all the way.

It took me some time to really
give Facebook a break because
of their layout and format.

At the end of the day I perfer
MySpace's functionality. But it
will take time, just spending a
few minutes here and there to
learn it.

You may not get it all... And it's
okay. Hey, I just learned on here
last week that I can do my own
blogging on Facebook. :)

Take your time and pace yourself!

This is the month I'm finally going to sign-up for Facebook and figure it all out. Really. The funny thing is, everyone says to me, "All kinds of people you used to know find you and that's really fun!" And I think, "Maybe I don't want those people from high school to find me!" :)

I resisted Facebook until last November, then I signed up. Now, it's one of my favorite places to go. I don't have a ton of friends, in the mid 50's, but I do love how I never know who is going to comment on something. For instance, my younger sister hardly ever comments on my wall, but a couple of her friends, whom I know somewhat, but don't socialize with, will post stuff or comment on pics. It's less intimidating to comment on someone's wall, I think, especially in response to one of those applications.

Where is the AW group? I was just looking for writing groups last night and didn't see it there, but I did join some writing group. Maybe that was it and I just didn't recognize it. I joined the one that said it was the biggest writing group on Facebook. (although, I don't think it is.)

And about the applications, some are fun, in small doses, but when you get the same one over and over, it gets daunting. I realize now that most people don't care if you respond, they only click your name because in many of them, they have to send it to someone in order to get their own results. (ie, quizzes) At first I was worried that I would hurt their feelings if I ignored their requests.

I don't want to be a negative nelly, but so far I'm finding facebook pretty useless. Aside from the applications I don't care about, I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing there. Sure I've been in contact with some high school people, but contact is all it is. I really don't have anything to say to any of them.

Nobody writes on my wall, not that it matters. When I write a general statement, it gets ignored. Not that it matters.

I saw a segment on Good Morning America about how job-hunters need to network on facebook to find job opportunities. I have yet to figure out how that's supposed to happen.

I have friended the (former) general manager of the place I used to work. He's the only professional I could think of that might have contacts, but what the hell am I supposed to do with that?

Anyway, I've heard of people addicted to facebook and have to post a comment on every little thing they do, but heck, I hardly go there now. The site slows down my computer, locks things up, and is proving to be a waste of time.

I love FB. It has got me numerous contacts in the business, and, just last week, led me to find a reprint home for my 1st novel. I now correspond daily with a publisher who loves my stuff and gees me on to send him ideas and projects. I've also gained a lot of new readers by promoting events like my appearances at signings/cons etc and just by posting regularly with stuff that people seem to like (e.g. 25 Random Things about me etc..)

I'm here if you want to hook up:

I also use the blognetworks app there to publicise my blog and have got over 100 readers from FB alone. You can hook me up there too if you like:
