Hi all! I'm just starting my very first blog (aside from a personal Livejournal, but that's more of a daily-life journal sort of thing, rather than a themed blog). And I know the title is just a bit misleading, but I don't really need help with where to go (started at Wordpress, since I have used the site before) or technical difficulties (that great sticky has already been helpful!).

Instead, I need help figuring out how to get started on content. What sort of post should my first post be? How do people usually introduce their blogs in their first post? Should I start with an introductory "This is my blog, and what I will write about, and why" post, or just jump in with my first topic?

Help!

Well, why are you starting a blog? What sort of content did you have in mind?

A blog is a printing press, a digital one. You can either amble in half-drunk and spit out manifestos about this and that, and no one will read it - unless they happen to agree with the drunken rants. Or you treat the printing press like a real press, and use it for a purpose.

When you define the purpose, you will find the content.

Well, I stated the purpose above, and I have ideas for content already. My problem is how to start. I mean, if you were writing a book (nonfiction) you would have an Introduction or a Preface (or an introduction AND a preface) but I'm just not sure what the conventions are for the Blogosphere.

In the first entry, I always tell about myself and about the blog. I write about my plan with the blog- what the readers can find in the coming weeks and months.

Your first post (reasoning, about yourself, goals) should easily translate into an ABOUT page (which you should always have). Not everyone will go back to your first post and read everything. Most new readers will pick up at an interesting post (sent to them through a link, tweet, or just stumbled upon) and then pick a couple of other posts (if they like your content) to check out. Rarely does someone start from Post #1 and read everything. The ABOUT page is your best way to introduce them to you, aside from your first post.

In regards to "what you should write", even with a stated goal you'll only find out what your focus is by actually WRITING the blog. Certain topics will pop up more than others, your passion will flare up more so on some posts and slowly the message you're trying to deliver will reveal itself. That is of course unless you're doing the "this is my life" kinda blog.

Keeping at the blog is the key to figuring out that focus. Feedback from your readers will also help guide you, sometimes in surprising ways. A blog truly is a labor of love. The more you put into it, the richer an experience it will be.
