Well, my eldest just had his first experience with stitches thanks to a Christmas toy that broke and sent a 5inch piece of metal into his leg.

4 stitches! Ah well, alls well that ends well, but I'm calling someone tomorrow to complain. I dunno who... but I'm going to say something. that's just freaking dangerous.

I'm jealous... no stitches. Not ever.

4cm gash, 4 stitches and a 9 year old... not fun. He kind of came unhinged. I've never seen my guy act quite like that. I thought his head was going to explode or that he was going to go all Linda Blair on me. I mean it, we came within inches of needing a freaking exorcist in there.

He's fine now. What does he say? "I'm so embarassed."

Ah well, so it goes. I'm sure the local urgent care has seen worse.

All the same, I think it will be a while before we go back to that particular establishment.

ETA: I did take him out for ice cream after that so he could cool down a bit. He was ready to stomp the daylights out of his brother (the one who accidently sent the toy into his leg). Ice cream is powerful medicine, I've found. Asuming you're not lactose intolerant.

ETA 2: the toy was already trashed before my middle guy even realized it, my daughter was using it, middle guy bumped it, she/it went rolling into eldest and the exposed metal popped out/slashed/stabbed my eldest's leg... which, BTW, proves it was a GREAT toy for a toddler...NOT!

Sure glad he's ok ad. Yikes. That's horrible and on the holiday too! It's not the stitches that kill ya, it's the needles. I HATE lidocaine needles!

Well, I found out how many expletives he's picked up in his 9 years when they gave the numb-it shot. :scared:

Thankfully, they weren't too many or too bad, but it was...erm..colorful to say the least.

I'm so pissed. That toy shouldn't have broken like that. It was my daughter who was messing with it and my younger son and they were using it in the way the manufacturer intended yet the metal broke out of the fabric and tore my eldest son up just from being near by.

I'm just glad the injury wasn't any worse, and of the three of them it's probably better (though I'm still really unhappy about it) that it was my 9 year old and not my 2 year old or 6 year old. I can't imagine how they would've handled stitches.

Later (years from now) he'll count those scars like stepping stones to adulthood. And he'll be glad to have them, too, if only to show that his path wasn't without risk and a fair amount of pain.

True, but one doesn't exactly expect to be viciously attacked by a Disney Fairies Playhut tube.

Hopefully he'll take some poetic license with the story he tells....

My daughter fell off her bike and needed stitches to her head. She went mental. We were supposed to take her back to have them removed but I did it myself whilst she was asleep. I left some money under her pillow from the stitch fairy. Still don't think she thought it was worth it.

What do they put in those shots? I remember getting a shot prior to stitches as a kid and it was spectacularly painful. Tiny Parametric was not impressed.

Well, I had stitches numerous times, but my brother was the 'impressive' one.

One time it took two paramedics, three nurses and a doctor or two to hold him down to give him the shot so he could be stitched one time. At least I think it was that many people, it could have been more. He kicked the tray with the sterile kit on it on purpose and all sorts of stuff.

I distinctly remember the shot in my chin hurting like a beast, but the one on my forehead where you could see my skull didn't hurt that bad.

Eek! When my youngest was four, she and her slightly older sister were jumping around the bedroom like loons. My youngest fell against something and tore her arm. It needed three stitches. This child already had a reputation for freaking out at the doctors. It took both me and my husband to hold her down so the doc could numb it. But, once it was numb, she sat and watched him stitch it up, fascinated by the whole procedure.

It was fourteen years of parenting before one of the four needed stitches for an accident. I'm quite proud of that :D Although my eldest had had them the year below for a minor op.

Yeah, this @#$#@ defective toy just ruined my good track record. Not. Cool. Will be calling to report this because the kids didn't do anything "above and beyond" to the toy to make it do this...and my oldest was just standing there when it happened.

Definitely report it. At the minimum you should get your money back and a coupon.

The first time I got stitches, it was 30 plus some internal ones in my upper thigh (cut on metal). I still have a 4 inch scar that's very fat and ugly and I was only 15 when this happened. I was totally cool getting them -- those shots do hurt the worst! -- but my dad freaked out the nurse when he waltzed in.

He came late, said he figured he'd finish dinner because hospitals always take a while, and then made me hobble to the car in the far parking lot to avoid paying parking fees! You'd have to know my dad and his sense of humor and his preoccupation with 'being a trooper,' but trust me it's worth an indignant chuckle. So bad!

Not looking forward to the bill. The copay is one thing and then the urgent care bills separately for everything else (as it is we're already out over $100 not to mention that the experience sucked for my eldest--overlooking the ice-cream run afterward ;) ). So, we will probably pay the copay plus a portion of the equipment, doctor's fee, etc. I'm keeping copies of the receipts, writing a certified letter to be sent to the claims department of both the manufacturer and the store where we purchased the item. I'll also have a chat with the consumer product safety commission.

I don't want to sound like a wide-eyed loon, but I'm really not cool with my kids (or any kids) getting hurt by a product. I mean, it's one thing if they did something ridiculously unsafe and caused their own injury (which, if you've got kids, happens sometimes), but it's another matter entirely when the company couldn't be arsed to do some QA on their product to prevent injury through normal use.

:Soapbox: (<---- that's an actual picture of me right now... life size!)

Ahhh... dads. What is it with dads/husbands and sayings like "be a trooper" and "shake it off" :Shrug:My husband does that, too. He called while I was trying to tape up my son's leg to go to the urgent care. He honestly said "Are you sure it isn't just a scratch?" Like somehow I have no idea the sort of cut that requires stitches. "Maybe you should wait until I get home so I can look at it..."

Meanwhile, in the background "Mom it's bleeding all over the floor..." 2 year old screaming "Owwie Owwie Owwie...Blooooooooooooooooooooood!!!" 6 year old crying "I didn't mean to do it...no one's ever gonna play with me again. I'm a bad brother!" Dogs barking...

Yeah, sure, honey, I'll just throw a bandaid on it and wait 5 hours for you to get home. Sounds great.

Um, no thanks.

I can honestly picture him with a severed limb saying something about fixing it at home with Bondo and Duct Tape. :D

On another note, for the scar, have you tried Mederma? I picked some up while I was grabbing the neosporin. I've heard good things about it, never used it.

My daughter had to get a few stitches in her finger when she was like 2. That was a rough night for all of us. Felt so bad for her, but I remembered what it was like. I've had them 3 times (2 on my forhead and once in my tongue...yes....my tongue lol).

The only time I actually needed stitches, the doc didn't give them to me. I had a nearly completely severed toe, and he put a bandage and some betadine on it.

Apparently. My dad also did the "you're fine" kick while I bled out on the beach. I got up and walked a block and a half before he picked me up in the truck and drove me to the ED.

I forgot how much these things cost nowadays; YES get them to pay the medical bills!

Dad broke his tooth on a rock that was in a jar of peanuts and even back in the day, he got Planters to pay for the dentistry. If you need a good lawyer-letter, I can get you a free one for that easily.

Thanks for the Mederma tip! My brother says it looks exactly like the trunk of a palm tree, so I figured I'd just get some leaves tattooed on the top one day :D Oh, and it was a shark bite (stab wound?), in case anyone asks you... ;) ;) :D
