Has anyone read anything really good lately? Better still, how about something written by someone you’ve ‘met’ on the AW forums? I think it’d be great to have a thread for AWers to write (hopefully positive!) reviews for work they’ve read from other AWers. Or, if you're not up for doing a 'review' just tell us what you read and what you thought! Not sure if this has already been done, if it has, please let me know!

I don’t usually write up reviews, but this is one I HAD to do.

Title-Silver Phoenix
Author-Cindy Pon (xiaotien)

Silver Phoenix is the story of a girl named Ai Ling—a girl who seems destined not to marry, thus bringing disgrace to her family. When her father journeys to see the Palace and doesn’t return for months, Ai Ling decides to do the unthinkable—travel alone, as an unescorted young woman, to find him.

Along the way, she meets the mysterious exotic (and hot!) Chen Yong, the roguish Li Rong and a whole host of demons intent upon killing her. In addition to help from her companions, Ai Ling discovers she has otherworldly abilities (including the ability to take over other people’s bodies…how awesome is that??) and a protective force that helps keep her alive along the way.

Ai Ling discovers she and the emperor’s advisor shared a history in her past life. He believes her to be his true love and will stop at nothing to have her once more. This might not sound quite so bad, except for the fact that he is ruthless, power hungry and has upset the balance of life by consuming the souls of other to give himself eternal life…(yark!) It only stands to reason that our protagonist could never be happy with someone like him!

Ai Ling must rise above all and master her newfound abilities to come out of her encounters unscathed and save the lives of those she loves.

I devoured Silver Phoenix. IMO this book is a triple threat (to get all “Hollywood” on everyone). It has beautiful cover art, a gripping plot and amazing writing. Cindy effortlessly combines great characterization (seriously, she made antagonists so despicable they made me cringe), expert pacing and a fast moving plot.

And on top of all of that, the story was refreshingly original. Cindy seamlessly weaves together old traditions, new (to me at least) fascinating monsters and an easy to follow plot.

A testament to Cindy’s skill IMO was when I (surprisingly) felt a pang of sympathy at the end of the story for the main antagonist. The ending rang true and was bitter sweet, yet offered a promise of more to come.

I particularly loved watching Ai Ling grow from a timid young girl into a fearless ass kicking female (one of my favourite types of characters!).

I eagerly await the second book and will definitely recommend that my library colleagues add Silver Phoenix to their collections!

Here is one I wrote for a guest blog:

THE CHILD THIEF, by Brom

Book review by, LM Preston, www.lmpreston.com

(4 out of 5 stars)

Brom’s, THE CHILD THIEF, is a remake of the epic tale of Peter Pan. It’s a dark tale bought to modern day, and delves into the hidden or lightly touched on sinister plot of the tale of Peter Pan.

I picked this book up because the artwork on the cover intrigued me. It was hauntingly beautiful. The boy on the cover enchanted me and innerved me at the same time. When I opened the cover to read the excerpt – I couldn’t put it down. So, I scooped it up and took it home, and fought with my husband to read it first.

Peter Pan was one of my favorite fairy tales when I was younger, and even today I replay the movie even when my kids aren’t there to watch it with me.. The Disney versions of Peter Pan (there were 2 versions, the cartoon and the full length movie) showed the tale as a sort of love story with Peter and Wendy. Yet, I always thought there was something dark about Peter, Neverland, and those Pirates.

Brom’s THE CHILD THIEF digs into the darker aspect of why would any kid want to go away and never grow up. Peter’s darker side, the side that made him desire to steal kids away to come to a land where they were in danger of death or worse. Lastly, whatever became of the ‘lost boys or girls’ that followed Peter? What made those kids so vicious?

From the moment I read the first chapter I was captured, Peter unfolds as a complex likeable character that is also sinister. See, Peter needs the kids just as much as they believe they need him. He purposely selects his victims, stalks them actually. Peter needs kids that are strong, have nothing to lose and that he can train to fight in the war that is waging in Neverland.

This book has a lot of violence, and is not for kids to read. The violence has reason and the characters have depth. The only reason I gave it less than 5 stars was because I cried near the end. See I prefer happier endings. The ending of this tale is good and fitting for the tale. I just wanted a different outcome.
