What printer model do you use or recommend for printing professional scripts? Obviously we're only talking about black and white laser printers. I'm looking to buy a new one but can't decide if I can get away with buying a cheapo one like the Brother HL-2140 or going with a higher-end model like one of the HP LaserJets...

Lexmark T520 is what I use to print my manuscripts. The e cartridges run me about $180 per, and I can print out about 10,000 pages plus or minus depending on if I am also printing black and white art. Way cheeper than the old HP ink jet cartridges, which ran about $45 each and only got me about 500 pages per cartridge.

While printers have gotten cheeper, the prices of cartridges are out of sight.

Yeah I would never think about printing a script (of more than 15 pages) on an ink jet– they smear, they're slow, and yes the ink cartridges are pricey and aren't good for many pages. Gotta go laser...

It's really worth it to spend the money and go laser. I had an old bubblejet that could print a whole library on a single ink cartridge.

Until it broke down.

Laser printers are faster and will make your script look better. And everything counts, right?

I had a Lexmark X1190 and got fed up with the cost of the cartridges. About $36 to $38each and you were lucky to get more than 300 clean pages out of it. I just replaced it with an HP p1005. Black and white printer only. The whole printer cost me $80.00 and the cartridge prints about 1,500 - 2,000 pages on a cartridge. $80.00 is the cost of the refill cartridge. By the time I pay for the new printer and have to replace the cartridge once the printer will have paid for itself. Prints about a page every 4 seconds.

Modern ink jets are pretty much as good as any laser printer, and sometimes better. They're also a heck of a lot cheaper. A really good one will cost you from one to two hundred bucks, dpending on how many otions you want. And no one anywhere can look at the final product and tell you didn't use a laser printer.

Nor will they care one way or the other. For a better brand, B&W cartridges will cost from ten to twelve bucks, and will print at least twelve full length screenplays.

Except that most of us can't afford, or justify, the price of a laser or its cartridges.
