How about a system based on chakras? You'd have the four traditional elements, plus sound/harmony (throat chakra) light (eye chakra) and psyche/thought/existence (third eye/mind chakra). In a system I'm developing, I have those higher three elements paired to opposing ones: harmony/chaos, light/dark, life/death. (Feel free to borrow and adapt, I'm not selfish :P)
