Does, "We're not taking new clients on at the moment." count as a rejection?

Ah well, c'est la vie. I'm in the middle of a massive re-write anyhow, probably best if I don't get any more requests until I'm done with that. On that note... If anyone wants a look at my new Chapter 1 it's posted on Children's SYW, nobody there is commenting and I'd really appreciate something! Even if all you want to leave is a form rejection letter.

Total silence! I am starting to wonder why none of the 30 plus queries I have had out are not getting back to me. Are there that many agents that just don't send a reply? General question- I have noticed in a lot of queries people will say it is like ------ meets -----. Comparing the book to perviously written novels. Should I be trying to compare my book to something that has already been written. Just an idea-anything to get me more requests! I'm dying here

This rejection made me laugh because it was so to the point:

"Unfortunately this does not sound right for us.
Good luck, Agent Fancypants"

Certainly (I mean I'll comment, not that I'll leave a form reject) I'll do it tomorrow when I can sit down & look at it.

Patience, young one. (I don't care if you're 80 years old; you're young in queries.)

How long have you been waiting? I'd say eight weeks of silence = rejection. And a mere 30 queries? Keep sending!

I don't know about the XX meets YY format. It works when you're trying to telegraph your point, like in this kind of bulletin board chat, but it doesn't seem terribly, I don't know, literary. Question: are those queries where you've seen this done examples of successful queries? Maybe you could float this in the Ask The Agent thread.

Another rejection on a partial from a dream agent.

"While the premise was intriguing, I felt as though the overall voice was for a much younger age group than YA."

But -- WAIT! I didn't query a YA. It was an MG! Of course the voice was for a younger age group.

It's Day 24 of the countup! And as of July 1 it will have been six weeks since I last heard from Mr. A-Week-Or-So. My Published Author Friend says that is the day I should nudge them.

It would have been nice to nudge them with an offer from someone else, but --

SPLAT. Another reject on a full today. It's really not such a disappointment since this agent doesn't do the kind of things that Mr. A-Week-Or-So does, but she does have the cachet that would have made a convincing nudge.

Oh, and ha, I think I should get a prize for the novelty of how I found out. I get a call from the Post Office. "Hello, Miss Plum. I have a very damaged package here for you. The pages are half destroyed and all out of order. It seems to come from Miss Agent from Big Agency. What's your full address so we can get it to you? And I'm very sorry for the condition it's in."

Miss Plum thought balloon: "Honey, the condition it's in is the least of my problems. Although I will see what I can salvage, reprint the stuff that's all messed up, and whip the proposal right back to someone else at that agency."

Maybe she doesn't rep MG any more ILSinTexas, some agents tend leave misleading information about themselves around. I think it's hard to track down all the places where you might have put your preferences in the past and they're too busy to bother.

Gak. 11 months, 20 days on a partial from L. Perkins. Eh, from Sandy Lu. Dear Gawd. If that turned into a full...I shudder to think. I did team up with an agent long ago. That one was so far back in my inbox sent file that it had virtual dust on it. Longest agent response evah.

Gak! Did you post that in the Lori Perkins thread in Bewares, Recs & Background Checks? You'll find something interesting up there on Sandy 'n' me. I got a few PMs after that post revealing even worse stuff.

No, but I'll check it out. If memory serves, I do remember that Sandy glutted herself with dozens and dozens of partials way back when. Hell, it could have been hundreds. So, is there any wonder why she got herself into such a damn hole? Unbelieveable.

No, she reps it. I'm sure she got a bit confused is all. Point is, she wasn't bowled over by it, which is fine. I want an agent who falls in love with my MS.

It was on her blog a while back, she fully admits she's nearly a year behind.

Honestly, if it were me, at this point I'd ditch everything older than about three months, if they're good they'll be repped before you get to them, if they're no good well then they'd be an R anyhow.

Actually, my misadventure with Sandy was something else altogether. She informed me that she had considered repping me, but then one of her clients alerted her to my postings in the Lori Perkins thread at AW -- so she decided to pack up her toys and go home. And that's not all there was; she originally told me she couldn't rep me because I didn't have complete artwork for my graphic novel and THEN got back to me with "You blew your chance by posting in that forum" e-mail. I've used it kinda. In a 'fans of the plotting of X and the vivid characters of Y should enjoy My MS'. It shows you know what market you're aiming at.

I went to a conference a couple of months ago and pitched to an agent (and yes, I used 'It's like Wizards of the Caribbean lol. Yes, he requested and sent one of the nicest rejections I've had) and he was very firm that a writer needs to show they know the market they are aiming for. It's not really 'who do you delude yourself that you're like' lol, more, as he said, 'Whose readers do you want to steal?'

And am biting my lip here. I may have very little face left soon...

Ouch!

I love you guys, but I'm going to try to keep mum as much as possible on the boards and unload on my poor long-suffering husband, for just such a situation. With my luck, the ones I'm interested in are psychotic googlers.

Sorry Miss P.

Ya'll throw a root beer float over here. Mmmmm.....cake.
