Once they find out what she went through before that champagne incident, no jury on earth will convict her.

Got a rejection yesterday that I sent out June 4th! I had already put it in the no reply category. She did appologize for taking so long to get back to me and thanked me for my patience.
I am getting an agent and a publisher critique at a local conference on my new book. That should be interesting. Instead of all the rejection through the computer I get to hear it face to face! Has anyone ever done one of those before? What are they like? I have no idea what to expect.

Boo on the rejection!

I had a face to face agent critique, with a major player a few years back before I ever started querying agents. I sent the synopsis & partial in advance and she had interesting things to say. At the time, I was too naive to think she'd reject me outright... To be honest, it was hard to hear face to face that she didn't like my book and why. But her comments helped me focus better with my plot and I was able to pick her brain as to what she saw good and bad, areas I could fix to make it better. Then we talked about the market, another one of my books. All in all, it was a great experience, and I'd do it again. This time, I'd be better prepared for a "not for me" response.

I got another rejection today, a Saturday no less. It always goes like this. I send out a big batch of letters and get 4 or 5 almost instant rejections. Then the rest seem to hang in the balance, neither earning a rejectior or a response.

Oh my gosh Erin! I am so nervous now, but in a good way. At least you thought it was helpful. I am just looking forward to talking to someone about my book and getting some feedback. I am really focusing on making this happen and I want to do everything I can to help it happen you know? I haven't even sent any queries out on this new book yet so I am just trying to make it shine and then send it out. Did they critique you on the synopsis and the first chapter or did they just talk about your idea in general? I am just going to prepare myself for the worse and hope for the best!

I got form rejected by Catherine Drayton the other day. Agh . . .

Three-quarters of the agents I've queried in the last three months have not responded to my query. It's disconcerting, especially as some of those agents don't say anywhere that "no response means a pass". It makes me kinda feel like that my query is so bad I'm not even worth a response.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make you more nervous! Just be prepared to ask lots of questions! The agent critiqued my synopsis and first 3 chapters, which she gave to me to take home. As we sat there, we talked more about the idea in general, what she didn't like and we even did a little brainstorming to fix what she didn't like. She was easy to talk to and very friendly. Just remember that agents are people just like us! You'll do good. Sounds like a great opportunity for you.

Boo on the Saturday rejections. I seem to get a couple of instant responses whenever I send out a batch, then the rest just languish, forever it seems. I just booted a bunch off my list as non-responders that were 2 months old. Non-responders seem to be getting worse. I've been querying on and off for 2 years now, and some agents who used to reply, don't anymore.

Sorry, too. I've had quite a few fast responders completely ignore me. I felt like I was either in the burmuda triangle of cyberspace or they thought I sucked so bad, they didn't want to bother.

Good luck on the critique! I've never had one either, but I'm going to my first conference in October and can't wait! But, I'm sure my excitement will turn to stress as it approaches. Some friends have had them, and they've said they're well worth it.

I suggest writing down your concerns ahead of time in case you get distracted or can't remember them, so that you can get the most out of the critique. I made the mistake of not doing that for my one face-to-face, and really regretted it.

Good job, Nova!

Heh, I did a hermit's weekend to finish my WIP draft. Three chapters in three days, a new personal record! One more to go!

Oh, a short story rejection on Saturday. The upside: Clarkesworld now takes shorts to 8000 words, so I now expect a quick reply from them on this piece.

First REAL rejection over here. Was very harsh, won't detail too much, but it basically said I can't write.

Ouch.

Back to work.

Sorry Eddyz..I just went through that myself. Try to brush it off and keep going. Agent's opinions are subjective. What doesn't work for one could be a gold mine for another.

Sorry about the R. Don't let it bother you. It's just one agent's opinion. Keep on querying and writing!

It's been a quiet weekend, no R's for me. Today, I sent off the full that was requested on Thursday...I wanted to take one last look through it after my recent R&R request. I feel so much better about the MS now and I'm glad it's done. Now, I'm excited to start editing my YA contemp after putting it aside for a month.

Thanks for the great advice and enocouragment on the critique. I am nervous and excited. I am totally going to go in with a list, that is great advice. I don't want to sit there stuttering with nothing to say. I am sure the critique will be helpful in the big picture of things.

Eddyz- So sorry about the wicked R! Don't let it get to you. This is a hard road but if it was easy than everybody would do it Hang in there.

My QueryTracker stats (which are not my complete stats since I got some agents from other places) are 363 queries sent with 163 Closed/No response. Don't read into it. Take it as a No and keep querying elsewhere.

Bastards. I mean it. And the subjectivity thing: one agent rejected me because my plot was "confusing and hard to follow," another because it was "predictable and had no suspense." Forget those rude bastards who said that to you.
