Do you ever get weird voice mail messages on your cell phone?

Today I got one from somebody calling me by my first name, talking about how he worked on my SUV, and blah blah blah, give me a call, etc.

I have no idea who this guy is! I do not own an SUV.

I have had other calls similar to this. They go on and on talking about their company or as if I had an appointment with them, as if they know me, and I do not know them.

So, is this a scam or do people just not know how to dial a phone number?

Is your name common? Maybe they're looking for someone else?

But if they keep going once you tell them they have the wrong #, then I say scam, too.

If you look around and don't see Rod Serling....

I vote scam.

I forgot to look for Rod Serling.

The thing is he heard my first name on my recorded message, but he mentioned a guy's name (as the husband) which is not my husband's name. He spoke as if he knew me.

I didn't actually talk to him; he left a message.

Our number is THREE numbers different from the number of the pharmacy a couple blocks down the street... people are driving us nuts calling for refills at all hours of the day and night!

That's kind of what I mean.

I get other calls from medical offices, for instance, who are obviously looking for somebody else.

It's very important to dial correctly!

Okay, let's practice.

Ring ring.

Hello.

Hi Kathy. How's your SUV doing?

I don't have an SUV.

Would you like one?

Leave me the f**k alone!

How's that?

I got a message on my phone once, from a mother berating her son for not answering and not calling her back. Aside from the obvious problem of her dyslexic fingers--the way she talked, I wouldn't call her back either.

After she left a second call, threatening to kick my ass, I finally gave up and left her a message.

You aren't dialing the right number, you stupid twit.

At our old house, we were one number away from the biggest cab company in the city - and we were the more convenient number to press for someone who was drunk.

Our house phone gets calls for the local college, middle school, newspaper, lumber yard and all kinds of friends of drunken people...but our house phone has a lot of outside interests. We don't judge.

It reminds me of the Seinfeld show where Jerry asks the telemarketer for their home number so he can call them back later, the telemarketer replies that they can't give out their home number, and Jerry says, "Exactly" and hangs up...

I have a slightly different problem, I keep getting text messages from a nightclub, I've never been there, its the only text I ever get, and sometimes I get 3 in a day telling me about their drink specials and the headline band thats playing there. There is no number just some code, and I tried texting them back to no avail, so every now in then I check to see whose playing there for shits and giggles.

I get all sorts of wrong numbers, often for a girl with my exact same name, which is a very uncommon one unless you're German. Even her kid called me once.

The worst was when a telemarketing firm's employees got hold of my answering machine as a way to pretend to make calls. It was full every day when I got home, and they'd never let me speak to a manager. Bastards! I'm so glad for cell phones, number blocking, etc.

My dad's rings so that he knows whose phone it is. It sounds so different than everyone else's!

I don't get that. But on more than one occasion, I've had my phone ring in the middle of the night (I don't answer it of course) and the message left is from some irate person calling me back telling me to stop calling them in the middle of the night because they don't know who I am.

Um...

I kept getting text messages from someone posing as a teen who wanted me to send her Tammy's address, and then how the party was last week, then something else over the course of a week. All from a number that was like 10000000015, but kept incrementing up.

Then I got ten in one night and called my provider and told them to block it or cancel my text service. So now I don't text.
