Smile Newbie

Hi there,
I'm a newbie here but not to writing, I've been a freelance writer for 8 years. I almost got two novels written, well I have one completed written which is a childrens novel. And then the other one which I'm just currently finnishing off is a i suppose you would call it a paranormal story.

I suppose my main question is should I be looking for a legit agent, and if so can anybody reccomend a few.

And the second is that I have been told to send my complete manuscript to Publish America, who said they were interested but after reading all the info on the boards it doesnt seem wise now.

So can any of you reccomend any legit publishing houses.

Thanks in advance for any response

Legit and PA do not belong in the same sentence. Welcome to the boards. Agent info is found under bewares and background checks. Good Luck.

Welcome, Hecate!

scfirenice is absolutely correct. PublishAmerica is NOT a publisher that you want to consider for your book. We have a thread here on the forum called the NeverEnding PublishAmerica Thread (or NEPAT, for short). If you want to read a few pages to convince yourself of this, go here:

http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=524

Legitimate agents can be found in a number of places, and you should NEVER "settle" for an agent. Always look for the best one to sell your book, not just the first one who offers representation. Our Bewares and Backgrounds check forum is just the place to find which agents are well thought of. Before you query one, check to see what people have to say here:

http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=792

Not all of the agencies/agents mentioned on this list are bad news. Sometimes, the comments are very favorable.

A few places to look for an agent are:
The Association of Author Representatives httP://www.aar-online.org You can search by genre or check out a particular agent for his/her credentials. Take the time to read their FAQ page, because you'll find a terrific discussion of what an agency relationship should be, and what you should expect from an agent. They also include a list of questions that an agent should be happy to answer so you know you've got a good one. Not all good agents are members of AAR, but quite a few are. They have a code of ethics that the members are bound by, and none of them charge a client fees upfront.

Also take a few minutes to check out Preditors & Editors, which is another watchdog site for both agents and publishers. http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/pubwarn.htm

There are more, but those will get you started. Good luck, and enjoy your stay here!

Hi Hecate,

Welcome. You mentioned sending your ms to Publishing America...NO NO NO NO NO NO. There is a post here on PA. I suggest you take a look. A seriously dodgy bunch.

You're going to love poking around this site. We have a wonderful bunch of people here, willing to help with anything, anytime.

Welcome, Hecate.

And the answer to your question 'should I be looking for a legit agent' is obviously 'yes'.
