Poetry? Nonfiction? Both? Help!

Hi all, I am working on piecing together the research / project that my father left behind on the Negro Baseball League and many of its players. I have tried to write it as nonfiction / memoirish but then I come back to poetry, and vice versa. Thoughts on combining these two forms into one book? It's meant to be a sort of love story for my father, the League, baseball. Sound interesting? Thanks all!
