Hello,

My name is Marilena, I'm Illustrator - Writer and I'm from Greece. I've been watching the forum the past month and finally I joined, and I find it very helpful. I finished my first illustrated fantasy novel eight months ago, in the beginning I have written it in Greek, and then I had it translated in English ( I hired translator ). Fist I tried to publish my book here in Greece (in Greece the agent isn't necessary), but that was a fault, because the Greek market is too small and the publishers do not appreciate so much the fantasy novels, unfortunately. I tried in Greece for around five months and I got seven rejections that hurt me a lot. The reasons that my book was rejected was mainly the high cost of the print, because of the illustrations included in the book. Production was expensive for a publisher here in Greece. That was the problem and prevented me from realizing my dreams.

But I decided not to stop, I had the translation in my hands and that was very important. Things has changed 360 degrees. I have lost the right path and finally i found it again. Now I'm looking for an agent in US or UK and i never again give up.

So I'm happy to be here, and I would like to ask if the fact that I live in a different country could be a problem in finding an agent, and if you are aware of any agencies that represent exclusively illustrated novels.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Marilena! :welcome:

Well, this is a great place to start. I say if you've been stalking our posts for a while you're already familiar with the forum, but do take the time to explore it a bit further, as you may find sections you've never visited before. ;)

In regards to the Greek publishing industry, being a Greek myself, I can totally understand what you mean. Books in Greece are massively expensive (average price is 20 euros per book, while in the UK it's just £8!!). They tend to print everything in high quality paper and such, so I'd imagine the cost of a book with illustrations skyrocketing! And indeed, they're not very popular, so publishers don't want to take the risk. I'm not sure why literature in Greece seems to lack the sort of diversity it so desperately needs. We used to have a good lot of authors during the past decades. Now some of the Greek best-sellers wouldn't even be considered publishable material by the English-speaking market.

Anyhow. Rejection is part of the game. Seven rejections is really nothing. You need to keep persisting and insisting. Every single writer receives a bunch of those throughout their lifetime. It's part of the experience. :D There are a lot of threads on rejection actually. You may want to look for them and see what people here have to say about it.

I wouldn't think that being in a different country would really be a problem for you getting an agent, but there are people here that could give you better advice on the topic.

Like I said, take some time to explore.

Again, welcome!:Hug2:

If I find agent will be like heaven for me!

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Hello to you, Marilena, and welcome to AW. I live in Belgium, but have an American publisher, so yes it can be done. Finding an agent will be the same if you are or aren't American/English. If they like your work, they'll sign you on. On the other hand, some publisher also accept queries from unagented authors. Good luck in your endeavors!
