Hey all. I thought I'd post a thread here to say hi. Hope I'm doing everything right.
My name's Joe, and I'm an aspiring writer like everyone else here. I'm not new to writing--I've been racking up rejection letters for about twenty-five years now, though at an increasing pace lately. I'm starting to have reason to believe my luck may change soon--I've been putting in a lot more BIC time over the last few years, and I've started to get personal rejections, requests for partials and fulls, invitations to send other stuff, and so forth. I haven't always been as dedicated as I am now, so I think I'm finally in a place on my learning curve where I'm doing a few things right.
My novels all seem to end up being young adult. I think I was a YA writer before I knew there was such a thing. My short stories sometimes feature teen protagonists and sometimes not. Pretty much all my writing is some variant of science fiction or fantasy.
I've got a manuscript I'm just starting to shop around. It's a 74,000 word YA contemporary fantasy about a boy who can disappear, sort of, and the con men who want to use his ability for their own nefarious purposes.
I've only queried a few agents so far. They're not yet beating a path to my door, wrestling in my yard to sign me up, or anything like that. Maybe you could look at my pitch and tell me what I'm doing wrong:
