Scary stuff...thoughts are definitely with her. She just tweeted that her area isn't evacuating after all, though, so hopefully that's a good sign.

Tsunami warning across the Pacific. NZ is on general alert, Civil Defense have swung in to action. My coastal area is due to be hit around 11am our time on Saturday morning.

I'm waiting to hear from all my Japanese friends in the region.

Right now, they're saying the quake was 8.8.

Here's hoping all the AW folk in Japan are okay (good to hear you are, ShapeSphere, Leanan-Sidhe, tt42, and Rosemadder).

From the USGS, it looks like there have been about 20 quakes in the 5.0 plus magnitude over the last several hours. That's pretty unbelievable. So are the pictures of large boats on shore and two engine airplanes pushed away from where they should be. From the pictures, it looks like there's a lot of damage on Honshu and effects farther south. The actual tsunami photos that show the swirl and the wave approaching shore are really unusual - I've never seen a swirl in pictures before. 8.9 is really major. Hope everyone is okay. Puma

Not in Japan right now (need to change my thing) but it looks like this wasn't the big bad horrible one that they've been expecting in my area for the past fifty years. It's a little farther north, but the tsunami is horrible and I'm waiting still to hear back from my friends. I had a lot of them that lived in low-lying areas. I'm pretty shook up right now.

Widespread fires and power outages being reported - but reported casualties are miraculously light, as of what I've heard this morning. But my own hopes and wishes are going out to our AWers in the affected areas, too.

That's the concern I've had. I know we had a moderate one in the general area of the Tokai quake a year or two ago, and they had said that it could trigger the big one, but if it did it should be within the week. That was the most terrifying week of my life. Are they giving any kind of timeline for that scenario?

I just heard back from one of my friends and he said the earthquake was the longest he's ever experienced by far.

I just heard back from one of my friends and he said the earthquake was the longest he's ever experienced by far.
No, they say it can happen next week, in a few months, or in a few years even, so I guess they don't know.

And yes it was very long, because there were a few shocks, one after another. We watched our books and stuff fly from the shelves, so we cleaned them up when the first one calmed down. In three minutes the stuff was on the floor again

Based on what happened in Los Angeles in 1994, we had some of the worse damage in the following two weeks from aftershocks. Keep footgear handy (you don't want to walk over broken glass) and think about at least temporarily moving items to safer places--for you as much as for them.

We had pictures come off the wall, and travel horizontally, for instance.

Thinking good thoughts for Japan and coastal areas--
