Deadlines, as it turns out, are awesome. After two or three weeks of half assed, slow writing, I pumped out 2,000+ words today and reached the finish line. Just need to edit more later.

Well, I think the story that started out at 3,600 words is finished. I grabbed it, slapped it and made it my bitch (I think that sounds much better than "editing," don't you?) and it now sits at 2,925 words. I think it's pretty good. My biggest worry is that being in a hurry made me miss things that would be obvious over a longer period of time. I still have a little while yet, though, so I'm trying not to look at it for a bit.
Getting the cover letter ready, though! Shelley

Yup, that one. If you want a reader, I'd be glad to swap last minute tales. I'd feel far less bad about subjecting someone to a reading deadline if they'd done the same. Though I'm still only about half through editing, so I don't know if mine'd be done on time...
EDIT: just saw your post in the other thread. I've got to be somewhere until about 8:20 or so NY time, so I probably miss the window. If not, though, I'd be up for a quick read.

And the story is subbed. That's always a good feeling, come what may.

And... subbed. The story could no doubt have benefited from a bit more editing, but I'm still pretty glad about the deadline. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this up and actually get something done tomorrow and the next day after that.

I bet both of your stories get accepted. I think just writing them in one go works really well for short stories
And of course you two just have it going on anyways.*fingers crossed for you*

Well, mine was more like twenty six different, aborted attempts before the deadline forced me to actually, you know, write the thing. Embarrassingly enough, this is my first completed story in June...

@shellyo and NathanielGood job on getting those stories finished by the wire!
I had a bad day rejection-wise, and worse news this evening from my brother (they had to put one of their cats to sleep today though they haven't told their kids yet. I've been giving one of my cats chemotherapy for months now, and it really drove home for me again that she might not live much longer). It does make the R's seem meaningless. I did sub a new story today so that was a bit of progress.

They become family, better than in some cases, so it's rough. Congrats on the sub! Shelley

Couple tough R's the last two days. It's one of those days where I really feel like putting my face through a wall until the hurt goes away.

GreenRoom, I hope your cat gets better. It's very sad when pets get sick. Like Shelley says, they are family.

![]() Aside from it being bad for the wall . . . you don't want to do that. Every rejection is a purple heart! Pin it on. Stab yourself juuuust a little with the pin as you do it, if you must, but pin that sucker on! Shelley

Sorry your cat is sick GreenRoom. I have two kitties myself and I know the pain of losing pets in the past. ::super giant hugs:: You're doing the best thing and treasuring your little furball. She's no doubt very thankful =)
And sorry about the R's, everyone. After nearly two weeks of crickets, an R came in this morning. It was personal and the editor was nice about it but you know how it goes. Now I'm contemplating whether to edit before resubmitting or just resubmitting. Decisions, decisions.

Since the Inner Critic stole my previous post under cover over the outage: somebody please give said Critic a good kick for me. Today's better than yesterday, but "not good enough" is still sneaking in there. First draft or not.
(and thanks for yesterday's kickage, even if it did get disappeared! I got a scene out of it, anyhow. )

Just a quick vent at the end of a three-rejection week. Wait, it's only Friday morning here, so I'd better not count my rejections before they're hatched...

Well, anyway. I finished the first draft and immediate clean-up pass on the current story, and usually at this point I can think about a story a bit and then do one last big revision pass and then a spelling-grammar-wordflow-tightening pass and call it done and be happy. But eh, my brain isn't working right, and with the problems with focus and memory I just can't seem to get a grasp on it, if that makes any sense. My Most Trusted Beta Reader gave it a thumbs-up (except for the usual "this-should-be-a-novel" comment, which is harder to fend off than usual when I've just dumped out a novella-length tale) and didn't have any significant comments, which normally would fill me with joy, but I have all these enormous doubts now just because reaching my own objective perspective on the story is so beyond me right now. I'm hoping I can make a slower pass through it this weekend and feel more confident in it as a story, but given the amount of items on my to-do list, I'm not at all sure that's going to happen.
So yeah, whining a bit. -Suzanne
