Finally starting to get over a miserable five day sickness that has brought my writing to a stop. I'm a small ways away from completing two stories for this month, but one will need some serious revisions. I've taken some antibiotics so I need to get it in gear!

Ok, reporting in. I have (some) time (left) tonight. I need to 1) get some actual work done, and 2) not stay up all night getting around to it.

RED, ugh, hope the meds help quickly! Take care of yourself!

Feel better soon, RED.

Hope you got some work done, Annie, but also got some sleep.

I finally decided to edit down one of my stories, nearly by half. It's much stronger now. It only took a zillion rejections to convince me to try it. Duh.

Red, hope you feel better soon.

I don't need hugs or kicks, I'm just posting to stay accountable, or at least make it more likely.

I have a lot of stories to revise. I told myself I was going to revise 4 or 5, at least, over the next week and get them sent out, and that I wasn't going to write anything new until I'd done that.

I got one short revised and submitted tonight, started revising another, and took a break to write something new.

It was just a haibun. It's a form I've never tried before and I had an idea, so I wrote it. I'm counting it as a flash since there is a prose paragraph. It was fun. But now I need to spend the next several days revising. I really, really do.

Ooh, I have never heard of this before. (I looked it up) I want to try! Good luck with that, Shelley.

But I can't start anything new until I finish my Write1 for July. Which brings me to why I am here...

Easy reading is damn hard writing. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

Head off to that ending while I decide whether my heroine is going to get bucked off her horse!

I vote yes. Buck her.

You can always get rid of it later if you don't like it.

I have accomplished...nothing.

Well, except for catching up on slush.

Maybe I'll have better luck this afternoon.

Good luck Soapdish! I'm just letting my short simmer in SYW. I've two critiques so far, but one was from my biased gf that said I shouldn't change anything...so I'm waiting for a few more opinions hehe.

I'd rather her rip it apart hehe. I'm used to criticism not praise. Besides if she says it's perfect when I know in my heart it isn't that leaves me nothing to work with :P.

Always best to have something to work with. That's why I hate form-letter rejections -- all I'm left with are my own doubts, and to revise based on doubt instead of constructive criticism... Not a good place to be.

Helping my kids with their 4-H reports and presentation boards better count as writing. Otherwise I'm not doing well today!

So many anthologies I want to submit to this month but that want is not turning into words...a kick please! (Or 5--one for each anthology.)

I apologize in advance for the following venting. It’s up to you if you guys want to hug me or kick me or ignore me altogether. I just need to tell somebody.
I'm feeling completely demoralized. I've been struggling for over 3 weeks to finish this blasted short story I started years ago. It's not the plot or the characters or anything. It's just I've been doing research and I've come to the realization my writing style and story don't fit any mags out there. Pretty much everywhere I look, it's literary writing and/or pretentiously cryptic stuff like that MCSweeney's nonsense. Even when the guidelines stipulate they’re open to new voices and styles, I check the stories published, and all the stories seem to be written in the same over-descriptive, forgettable, and cryptic style.
What’s wrong with “normal” stories nowadays? You know, the ones that have a beginning, middle and ending.

I’m not quitting this freaking story, though. I like it.

Let me get this out of the way up front. Some of us read and write literary fiction and enjoy it. The fact that you don't like it doesn't make it pretentious nonsense. That's discounting an awful lot of us with single, big brush. Not cool.

With that out of the way, I find it hard to believe there's no print or online zine out there anywhere in which your style of writing will fit.

I think you just have the blues from working on this particular, clearly difficult story for so long. That happens!

Tell your story without regard to what you've read in magazines. Tell your story. Then find a home for it later. You'll feel better about it.

Quote:

You don't have to quit it, but maybe you should take a short break and write another story instead so you can go back to it fresh.

Good luck.

Shelley
