I read this book years ago and it was probably written in the 1970s. I can't remember the author's name, but it is a satirical novel about the secret British government department responsible for missing people (actually causing them to go missing!) and I would love to read it again.

Does anyone know the author or where I can find a copy?

I can usually find any book, but in this case that's not a lot of info. With the way search engines run, it's hard to find a title "Finger" becase it includes every book on finger painting and who knows what:

I found "The Finger" by Aaron Marc Stein published in 1974:

Searching that author and title on Amazon leads to this, which I suspect is what you're looking for:

Thanks, Ben, but it's not that one. 'Finger' is the main character in the book and, as you say, this makes it very difficult to do a search.

Thanks for looking, though. Much appreciated.

Asking the good folks over at Book Club Forum might be a better bet than asking here. I've looked through some of the directories and book listing sites for something even close to what you describe, but nothing is jumping out at me.

ETA: From reading the jacket copy of the Christopher Wilkins book, I think we have found the title in question.
