Hi everyone. Today I have found myself in a unique situation. I'm working on how to best handle it, but am coming up short. I can use some advice. My name is Mike. I'm a passionate writer, however, like many of you I've let life get in the way of my writing and have not reached the heights I had hoped to by this point in my life. Now, I'm faced with another obstacle which I'm struggling to handle.

I'm sick. To summarize things, it may be a terminal illness. I'll know more in the coming days and will have a better read on the situation.

Should the worst case scenario come about I am not going to burden my family and friends with my problems. Still, I have a lot to say yet. Knowledge to pass on, experiences I've gone through, generally speaking I want to share my life with the people closest to me. I find myself drawn to the idea of using a blog as the vehicle for this mission. Then, if the worst does wind up becoming reality, the blog will be there for my family and friends to read and share. Just in case the day comes when I can't formulate my thoughts into words.

Does anyone know of anybody who has done something similar? Is it a realistic idea? Im just looking for some thoughts and would appreciate them.

Much Thanks,

Mike

Well, I think blog is as good tool as any to pass message.

If you’re about sharing your life with your close ones; you can do it your way without thinking all the stuff bloggers seem to be thinking, but somehow I’ve got the picture you want people to read, right? I don’t know about similar, but there are a lot of blogs about disabilities and people facing challenges in life, some more permanent than others.

It’s really the writers pick (I think), which road to go down, but if you think your story can encourage someone in similar situation or have some other uses I'd say go for it. Your relatives can also take comfort from it later.

Edit: and about being realistic; it's certainly not impossible. People take a lot more complicated paths in life and if you feel that is yours then who are others to deny it?

Hi Mike,

Whether your condition is terminal or not, one thing is clear: you need an outlet for all that your going through, and writing is calling to you, so why not listen? No one will begrudge you for sharing your experience; these will be your marks. And whether you're alive or dead, there will be people out there who hold your words very dear to their hearts. Of course, do it for you, first and foremost.

I'm not familiar of similar blogs but I'm sure it's been done.

Don't hold back - let it out, man!

You might want to check Metafilter if you want to see if anyone else has done something similar. Whether or not someone else has if you have something to say, do it.

I agree with M-Bone. I blog would work perfect. And you can now have blogs on Kindle. I would look into that. Blogging is not too much time like writing a novel, and it's very personal and has that "real-time" effect. It brings it home.
