Lisa- this so much!
Alouette - you're thinking of studying Russian? Is it a family or interest thing?

That sounds so awesome, Ely. I'd read that in a heartbeat
![]() Alouette - I've always been interested in Russia. I studied 19th and early 20th century Russian history at school, and it's fascinating how theyve transitioned.

Yeah, I just think it's a really culturally diverse country and the literature and history is just amazing. We've never been able to do much Russian history at school unfortunately but I've been reading some pretty interesting books on it and I've done my own research and I love it

Yeah, I wrote something about that near the top of the page actually?^^ Sounds very cool.
Both my parents were born in Mauritius which is a former French colony so my mum's first language was French and I have French ancestry. French was actually my first language, but I went and forgot it somehow when I started primary school.

Wow so you're both bilingual
![]() Studying Russian history was kind of random, actually. It was only because history in (the equivalent of the American sophomore year) was an elective course and the teacher had discretion to choose the topics. He was from the Soviet Union, so he chose to teach what he was passionate about. My first language was Cantonese but I'm kind of hopeless at it because i don't practice enough.

Well, I used to be but I forgot it (how one can forget their first language is beyond me...).
I've gotten back to the level where I can pretty much understand it though. Ooh, Cantonese is very cool. I imagine it would be really, really difficult to learn that language so it's good that you can speak it. Whenever I say I want to do Russian, people ask me why I don't do Chinese instead...

If you don't speak it, it's easy to forget but it should be easy for you to pick up the language again (as compared with learning it from scratch).
sYW is a great resource! Use it wisely
