Interesting read.
I think there will come a time where dated pieces may make a resurgence though. It's already happening a little bit lately. Boardwalk Empire HBO series and Life on Mars (a modern cop show set in the 70s) for example. I've seen games coming out for Computer/Console that specifically set us in the 1940s-1960s. I think even in 2050, a good, well-told Noir classic set in the Red Scare era doesn't have to worry about people not wanting to watch it because there's no staggering technology back then. That's the obvious solution for those old, antiquated plots - an old, antiquated setting.
