That's very nearly what I was thinking.

Actually what I was thinking was 'If he thought those crits were harsh, there's going to be blood all over the ceiling if SP ever gets to him'

In a nice and friendly, admiring kind of way, natch.

He's going to have a very hard time if he ever gets to take a college level writing class.

A very hard time. You lot, even SP, are kinder than I or my colleagues would be.

My writers' group is pretty damn harsh when they need to be. They've made people cry apparently. But it's done face to face, which I think helps enormously to gather tone etc.

Someone who thinks AW is harsh would never be able to cope with a red-ink-covered manuscript from an editor and the question, "Why the hell did they buy this shit from me in the first place if it's that bad?"

Oh yeah, that was my reaction too when I received my first round of edits. It was so bad the editor marked up only one-third of the book and told me to fix the rest the same way. I think she ran out of time.

It's STILL my first reaction to editorial notes. It doesn't last as long now (unless I'm on a bad one) but it's still there

Along with the first reaction to a crit: 'How very dare the--oh wait, they've got a bloody good point!'

I empathize with our dearly departed. I was that golden child growing up. EVERYONE told me how wonderful everything I wrote was. I was, without any doubt, the best writer in my high school -- and really I *did* have talent.

BUT.

I wasn't ready to be a published novelist. I didn't realize it, but I wasn't ready to compete on an adult playing field. Edited to add: I would have been *crushed* if I'd gotten adult critiques at that stage. None of my early experiences would have prepared me for that in any way.

I was lucky. I stopped writing for quite a while, and in the interim I not only got a BA and MS in English, but I also focused on technical writing and began writing in the business world. My first real-life job taught me SO MUCH about how to be edited and how to approach writing as a business. By the time I returned to creative writing, I was both a MUCH better writer and better able to handle critiques.

I won't lie -- critiques still hurt. I want everyone to love every one of my golden words. But they don't, and I've discovered that it's not only likely that I have a lot to learn from other people, but that in the end my work is much better for it. And THAT is the real bottom line.

The ability to take criticism on the chin, understand that it's not personal and learn from it is part of growing up, I think.

And being a grown up has nothing to do with age.
