ON the edge of the insane feral.
Lately I have noticed a lot of what I call thread swoopers, AW'rs (usually low post count folks, but not always) who swoop into a thread, glance at the content of maybe one post, and vomit out some advice that has noting to do with the thread.

Things that clearly say they didn't even read the thread title. And the comments they make are broad statements like; there is no one way to write and don't let anyone tell you there is--when the thread was about editing your work.

What is the purpose of these swoopers' comments? Are they padding post count? Think they are witty? Or maybe a version of troll? Instigators who want to stir up some flames? Or something else?

Swooping? People give the best advice they can even if it's just general :).

It probably is just to bump their post count. What they want is to get into SYW.

So any old crap will do!

(I'm kidding! I'm kidding!)

You know, if you see a particular new arrival posting unrelated commentary a lot just to increase post count, the mods should know about it. One of them us will talk to the new person and explain, in a friendly way, that we don't work that way because we want them to become a part of the community and actually interact with others.

Maryn, who's seen it happen

Also some are spammers who make random posts in different rooms and then in a week or two add a spam sig line, thinking they'll slip under our spamdar. They don't :D

I've been known to miss the point more than once. Many a thread goes:

OP
on topic reply 1
on topic reply 2
on topic reply 3
chris's left field ruminations and overthinking things
on topic reply 4
on topic reply 5

Sheesh. I apologize, all right?

But often I'm very guilty of not close-reading and I jump to wrong conclusions.

I actually was reading the first post here thinking "Gosh I hope she's not talking about me." I find all the threads I post in via the "new posts" function. So I really do have a tendency to enter a thread I think looks interesting, and if it's received a lot of responses before I got there, sometimes I will skip over those to add my commentary. And, because I have kids (including an 8mo baby) I'm usually checking AW only briefly so may not remember I posted there and may not see the thread again under "new posts" when I return.

I guess I'm a swooper. :(

Eta: I skipped over everything between SF and this post.

Another explanation for a swooper might be newbies who are nervous about posting. They may want to join in on the conversation, but are intimidated by the familiarity of seasoned members, so they blurt something out just to get in on the action. I've posted plenty of random, unknowledgeable comments that probably have made people go :Wha:, but you can't get to know people if you don't participate.

...or they could be trolls. :D

I resemble this remark. Or maybe I look like a troll. Dunno.
