Got a two star review where the reviewer said it was confusing but parts were funny and he's trotting out his 'social media soldiers' to retaliate against her.

He's a real winner.
Gosh, and the actual text of the review was pretty generous, for a two-star review. Guess he didn't bother reading it.

What I find telling is how self-righteous and full of certitude and conviction his blog post is, as if he naturally expects people to rally round him for being so abused.

His language reveals a lot about his state of mind. "Punishment?" "Deserve?" "Nature (capitalized!) does not forgive?" Fantasizing about killing a fellow commuter who has breathing troubles? "I'm going to read one of her books ... and trash the shit out of her in a public forum?" "Don't forgive--punish?"

Nice.

The discussion I linked to earlier about persons unknown trying to rig the vote for the July-August book in an influential reader's group on Goodreads has some interesting comments.

Quote:
Michelle wrote: "It sounds to me like the contest is rigged!"

It was rigged. By a bunch of fake accounts coming out of nowhere to join a site they had never been to before, then a group they'd never heard of before, just to vote for this one book. All before even adding anything to their profile like, I dunno, books and such.

All of this righteous indignation and immense butthurt being displayed by these supporters of the vote rigging is just hilarious. (Ala)
"Historical Fictionistas" is a fairly large and active group on Goodreads. The book that becomes their July-August read can expect to have a big surge in reviews and attention (this reading group alone has over 3000 members).

So apparently someone decided it would be a great marketing idea to create sockpuppet accounts to get this book on the ballot.

The author weighed in on the thread, which I'm not sure is a great idea.

So, it's not exactly about an author behaving badly about a review, but it is about someone trying to rig things in order to get more reviews.

Torcivia actually did post a 1 star retaliatory review. Classy.

That Goodreads thread is amazing.

I am so sick of seeing "But I'm small press and have to do my own marketiiiiiing!" used as an excuse for fuckwittery and cheating. I'm not saying this author deliberately did so; she seems pretty naive, although anyone who'd stopped and thought for half a second wouldn't have encouraged her friends to go join a group just to vote for her. But her posts in that thread and the vicious posts of others...quit using "small press" to justify bad behavior. Nobody owes you shit just because you're with a small press.

I know. I was pretty floored when I read her comments and the two people who wanted to defend their behavior. I mean, come on. I thought we were all adults, here.

That actually scared me. I meet people out in public who annoy me all the time. Personally, my pet peeve is people smoking where they're not supposed to -- hospitals, schools, those sorts of things. Annoys me to no end when I see it. It does not lead me to say things like, "I'm not allowed to euthanize him, oh, but I fantasize about it--sliding that needle into a vein while he sniffs and whimpers."

That... doesn't make me feel good.

I suspect even many of the authors throwing their weight around would agree with those principles. The problem is living up to those principles when the thing being criticised in something one has invested too much of one's ego in.

... Which is what strikes me as the root of the problem. These people are acting as if they are protecting their babies from marauding bears, where any tactic is acceptable because the stakes are so high. There is no perspective.

OK, I'm curious. What portion of the Respect Your Fellow Writer rule applies here, when the writer under discussion has obviously also not followed it?

Just because someone else ignores our rules doesn't mean that we are allowed to.

And just as having told the truth is excellent protection against an accusation of libel, saying that someone has been foolish when they have isn't necessarily a contravention of our One Rule.

Being a writer isn't a magic Get Out of Jail Free card for anti-social behavior. We can't mention that so-and-so is behaving badly ... because he's a writer? I don't think so.

No one's calling him out for writing a parody or for self-publishing his book. He's being called out for acting like a bully.

M.Macabre is well-respected
Late to the thread but WOW that blog post was difficult to get through, as were the comments. His conduct towards the reviewer, such as calling her ''my sweet,'' comparing her to a man he'd like to murder, and the sexual references, is just not appropriate.

Makes me think twice about writing a review though.
