Welcome to the January Flash Fortnight!

The January Flash Fortnight will run from Sunday 15th January (Day 1) to Saturday 28th January (Day 14). Each morning during the challenge, I'll update this post with a new prompt for the day, so please check back if you find them useful! All of the challenge prompts will remain permanently available to you, so if you'd like to use any of them outside of the Fortnight, please feel free to do so.

Tips on using the prompts

Think of the prompt as a starting point. When you look at it, certain words, phrases or ideas might immediately come to your mind. Try writing these down. For each of these things, consider what words, phrases or ideas that they, in turn, inspire.

Keep going in this way. You could free associate on the thoughts you're getting, or ask yourself questions on each thing: What is it about this that I'm drawn to? What would happen if I followed this train of thought to its logical conclusion?

Try not to censor yourself, or second-guess your imagination. In the end, the idea you end up with might be completely unrelated to the prompt - and that's completely fine!

Good luck!

Sophia, could i make a tiny suggestion? (though you can ignore me completely if you don't agree; i won't be upset :))

Do you think you might be able to, as well as updating the OP with each prompt, let us know each prompt in a new post in the thread? Last year, i found i'd get busy with things and forget the prompts had been updated. Doesn't mean i can't write based on the prompts later, of course, but this year i'd love to give each prompt a try on the day they're posted.

Like i said, feel free to ignore me :)

Can you explain this some more, Sophia, please? You mean there are prompts to give us ideas but we don't have to use them? Is the idea mainly to just come up with 14 stories in 14 days?

Sea Witch: The challenge is described more fully in the Flash Fortnight sticky, but that's essentially it, yes!

Oh, wow, love the sound of this. It reminds me of a month long flash fic challenge on deviantArt I participated in last summer - it was fun but I had the most difficult time keeping up! (31 fics in 31 days... need more stamina... D: )

A fortnight, however, sounds manageable. Count me in!

I did my first one last night. So I didn't use the prompt--sorry. I already subbed it, already got a first rejection  and already sent it out again. 450 words. SF which I've never done in my life. I'm learning A) the more subs you have floating around, the less you have emotionally invested in each one and B) after the first rejection (ever) the following ones don't hurt so much. At some point, you have to just hold you head up and feel like: who was it that said something like "they just don't understand my genius." Bradbury? :D

Well, this is going to turn out longer than flash. How much longer, i'm not sure.

ETA: 2150, as it turns out. :)

For the record, I did the first prompt yesterday. What I wrote felt more like a snippet of a longer piece than a complete flash fiction, but oh well. And I'll be working on the day 2 prompt this evening.

Well, i've got a start for 'A new bridge' and haven't had a chance to try 'Blackout' yet. So much writing and editing to do, not nearly enough time!

I've got four completed stories now, but only one of them is flash. I have a start on a fifth (A new bridge) but i think that'll be over flash length, too.

Maybe i can get them down after edits? Heh--or, knowing me, i'll add more words.

Anyway, having great fun so far, Sophia. Thanks! :)
