I don't believe I see as others see—

ashamed of what small hours may have spoken.
I stride instead, free to wander elsewhere—
asleep, with my vacant eyes wide open,

He always wears a lengthy, tan slicker --
never a word, but I've heard him snicker.
His matching hat's drawn low 'round his eyes
as he stabs me with his un-steely knives,
or shoots me (sporting that sinister frown),
though it's only fear that lays me to ground
since I cannot run (or be killed it seems)
from this toad-faced man who stalks me in dreams.

I can neither repel nor escape this spell.
Sweet Mother tell me, for you must know well,
is there tonic for this nocturnal curse,
or chant to mutter which makes it disperse?

for technicolor -
full blown nightmare.
Anger speak and monster thrash
are the stuff of evening now.
I fear sewn closed lids of pill sleep.
Hear animal moans
like fingers-caught-trap,
wretched cries whimpering
over feet running
through thick muck or over sharp stones
and someone chasing.

to the rush of Colon's winds
in the heart of winter,
to bent-backed elms
like white-robed Muslims
salaaming at evening prayer.
Birds fly and nest within me,
brooding orbs bearing suns
for a new spring
––and I remember you.

With blood-bright bouganvilleas
I come to your door,
only to find an empty chill.
It sends these petals to the ground.
I trace my lips where yours had been
in the dead cold of yester night
and hear them speak the truth.
Our time together falls into the past
like these once bright petals
that lie wilting and gray in the dust.

In life, contrition sets me
on a joyless walk where
I am now emptied
of heart and color.

seek meaning and form.

Separated and forsaken:

nebulous thoughts

seek each other.

When bonded together by enigmatic forces,
the structures are alive and diverse.

They shine in the darkness,
yet I still seek to see their true purpose.

When my eyes open,
I watch the new universe disappear in an instant.

Sometimes in a brilliant flash that eradicates everything on sight.
Sometimes trapped in the infinite depths, never to be seen again.

Until I close my eyes again,

I remain the destroyer of that universe.

June night and moonlight,
the softest time of year.
Wither my soul wanders
I cannot tell.
The flowers are fragrant,
the lilies full of perfume.
Perhaps I am in the garden
or running through the fields.
Faint lights beckon me-
fairy lights of green and gold.
Sweet music fills my ears,
songs of fire and of flame.
An aurora dances above.
Silver pools reflect.
The moon has turned crimson,
drums pound out the rhythm.
A griffon cries overhead,
my soul soars to meet him.
Together we fly,
our hearts entwined.
Freedom! Oh sweet freedom!

Dreams of the Interrogator

At the edge of my fears,
sleep is always a restless struggle,
a connection with those faceless demons
who lead men astray.
Fear no evil, I am told,
but how can I not?
I squirm in the constant torrent,
the never-ending stream of panic
and water
and bravery
and shame—
this is my pillow.
Be glad it's not yours.

-----------------------------------------

Entry #15

The Exile

You are beautiful in your horror
Oh my sweet
Lovely in your pain
You cling to it like diamonds
They glimmer in the darkness of your heart
Let me torture you till you love me
Let me beat you till your pain is gone
Let me claw you till your wounds are healed

You are lovely in your torture
Oh my sweet
Such beauty in your fear
Your tears shine like steel
And fall at my feet, the links of chains
Let me dress you in them tonight
Let me cut you till your veins run dry
Let me terrorize you with compassion
Till you've split yourself in two

There is poetry in your terror
Oh my angel
And horror in your love
As you worship your assassins
And share a bed of shards of glass
As behind a fortress of facsimile
You find damnation in Paradise
As you orchestrate your demise by hand
I beg the night itself to tell
What ghosts have made such dark demand
To run from love and live in hell!

-----------------------------------------

Entry #16

24/7 Fun?

Late at night
the buzzing cell
cried to be ignored
till days light exposed the snake’s bite.
The webs vastness made small
as spectres haunted through fb
spreading lies too easily believed;
coded threats by anom.
Mum’s wisdom to ignore
sticks and stones,”
the thoughts behind
hidden in babble.
Dad’s “always fight back
don’t lie down,”
opened a gulf between,
now I see the anger
wasn’t for me.
My friends’
stood aside
watching the pain
offering little but words unheard,
hands unseen.
With every retreat
the distances grew
till loneliness consumed,
smothered in darkness
I could be no more.
Only in the last moments
the crystal light of family,
remembered joy in friends’,
did I see.
So I left
loved ones weeping
asking why,
yet never knowing;
filled with my regrets.
All for someone else’s
fun.

-----------------------------------------

Entry #17

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES

In a storage center underneath the highway
into No Circumstances, Arizona,
I rented a storage unit, swept up bouquets
of gathered dust, sprayed doses of ammonia

as a Wiccan would blood in a spell to cast out
pests from my windowless, anonymous box
so on a bare mattress I could begin to sprout
dreams uninterrupted by ringings or knocks

of modernity, only ceaseless white vigor
from traffic above. Like a fetus enwombed
I slept and followed premeditated triggers
which forced my creative synapses to zoom

along a cerebral path which always pursued
a road in a loop, a racetrack of the mind
wherein every lap strung together would renew
any thought process I’d somnially maligned

until, honed, streamlined, I bypassed enzymatic
reactions, and my thoughts, free from mass, took flight.
Inches at first, I saw myself inert, static –
still life image of Man, At The Speed Of Light –

soon, though, my consciousness rose above cloud, ozone,
through space’s black ocean I dove without splash
or surface for return, only nether unknown
overhead, body below (now with mustache

grown), and I’ve yet to awaken. I know because
I’ve been where future and present are woven
loosely by strings apt to fray, and Earthly laws
of physics no longer apply, they’re bent, frozen

by the dream-thoughts accelerating through my mind
So from a realm beyond hyperspace I send
a request for donation, if you’d be so kind,
to that storage unit aforementioned: I never want this lease to end.

-----------------------------------------

Entry #18

Dancing the Dactyl Dream

Demons creative and dangerous dance with the merriments
Birth’d by the darkest of shadows inspiring us fearfully.
Angels, too, valiant and mighty, do comfort us truthfully
Guests in our sleep, they traverse intellectual firmaments.

Sleep brings companions we greet with such cheer, or dread woefully.
Dreaming brings happiness gaily brought forth as we instigate
Visions of futures desired and of loves that invigorate
Memories, passions, and motives we note sometimes ruefully.

Dreams on occasion do flatter our minds to mitigate
Mental perception and drive conception to think on it.
Nightmares, then, force confrontation of fears, do not dwell on it.
But, do we always understand what we fear when we ruminate?

Whether of dark or of light, we do dream of such wonderments
That, in the end, we request: can we ponder, and sleep on it?

Entry #26

Replay

tucked away
in some recess
of my brain

a few wrinkles
perhaps
some scars

that’s all you are

nights spent
like a dirty old man
dreaming young lovers

dreaming of us
then

life played back

some frames and audio
have been lost

some were
reformatted to fit

edited to run
in the allotted time

and to keep them
from becoming

a nightmare
