Thank you, Kie! :e2kissy:

Simile: an explicit comparison or analogy based on concrete elements of similarity (makes use of ‘like’ or ‘as’): "Her kisses are as soft as cushions."; “She smells like roses”.

AWOL
danger, like a snake
curled up in the pot of
a snake charmer,
waits for her.

Where opinions have a distinct aroma.
What awaits her?
The light, patient like sun through raindrops,
or the dark—like the cloud that goes before?
Perhaps it is neither (nothing like the void)
but everything as calm as nothingness...

To steal (and paraphrase) from Ted Kooser's example in his book (The Poetry Writer's Toolkit, I think) of a war veteran describing maggots on a soldier's eviscerated intestines, "the maggots rose like foam."

They weren't foam. The "like" describes a process of imagination rather than the end result, which would be rather glib and a little too easy. And I think is more colorful and terrifying for it.

"This is actually a metaphor because the 'as' here is not comparative. In this phrase you are a butterfly not like one..." Kie

Kie, thank you for the correction. It's been, literally, a million years since I've gone over this stuff and though it is so simple, it's fundamental to everything else. It's good to have these kinds of reviews.
