minimum word count kindle book?

Can you publish a short story as a kindle e-book? Why would someone use smash words compared to just kindle? Can you directly publish to both with no middleman, meaning without smashwords? Also how do you go about getting your short story on itunes and or Ibooks? What I'm writing is probably going to be around 10,000 words... I most likely will not publish it, but I just wonder...

Yes.

Smashwords will place your book through many sales channels including Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Kobo, Sony, Diesel, etc.

Both what? I don't understand the question. You may publish through as many sales channels as you like as long as your title is not in Amazon KDP Select, which has an exclusivity clause.

Smashwords or going directly through Apple.

There is no word minimum/limit for an e-book. I believe my shortest story is 6,000 words, but many people post 1,000 word flash fiction pieces or bundle several pieces together. CreateSpace (for paperback books) has a minimum page requirement. Twenty pages, IIRC.

Dont know about others but I've seen pieces on iBooks that are only a page or two long.

Not at all. Just keep your expectations in check about how many you'll sell. It's not unusual to sell close to 0 per month, and the fewer works you have available the more likely that is to be true.
