Hello all!

I'm new to the forum and thought I'd make my own thread. I figured this would be good for us Australians to do a bit of socialising, as well as discussing Australian concepts.

I don't know about you guys, but a lot of my writing pertains to my Australian upbringing. I try and capture the essence of the Australian lifestyle in my writing because I feel that a lot of the greatest Australian books keep to the culture. For instance, John Marsden always wrote in a particularly Australian way, especially in the Tomorrow Series (one of my all time favourites!)

I think I've brought up something good (hopefully!). I'm sorry if there is already a thread for this, or if its in the wrong place feel free to move it to the appropriate place.

Thanks everyone! Can't wait to get your replies! (Both Aussie and International!)

There does happen to be 2 threads for us Aussies, one named "G'Day" and the other "You know you're Australian when..."

But unless a mod decides to move these posts into one of those, I don't see the harm in having a new Aussie hangout. :)

In any event, the question you raised about Australian authors writing with an Australian culture is not one that's been covered in the other 2 threads. :)

For me, personally, I tend to write in fantasy worlds, so there's not really the chance of making it super Aussie. But I think my Australian sense of humour comes through in most of my writing, regardless of setting. :)

Hi Chris! Welcome to AW.

Like Cliff Face, I write about secondary fantasy worlds which bear no resemblance to modern Australian society. However, I suspect a little slang might occasionally sneak in (especially since one of my characters is a bit of a larrikin.)

Urban fantasy set in Australia is a very interesting idea. I can imagine it would have a rather different flavour than UF set in places like New York. :)

Hi Chris,

Welcome! I don't tend to write in an Australian setting myself but good idea for a thread.

I love John Marsden's work, he has such a beautiful writing style. I was lucky enough once (about 10yrs ago) to spend a weekend at his estate learning writing from him. He is very inspirational and very talented :)
