Hi guys - Could you change the name of my blog on the list (was Youth, our greatest natural resource)? I renamed it "Pass the Torch".

Thanks!

You know, Matt, we may want to skip Temlyn this round. She said she was really busy and was okay if we went around her. Then the Nav could direct to your site and you could continue. If we ever finish this round, we'll have to revisit what works and what doesn't.

Hey there--it's me, Julia (Temlyn). I know I said on Friday that I couldn't get to blog over the weekend, but I'll be getting my entry up either today or tomorrow (we've got some bad storms moving through, so whenever the lightning isn't bad).

I know Matt said he was a few days late when he posted on Wednesday (Sunday was when he said he could have, but didn't), so apparently it's not the worst thing to be a few days late.

So, if you'll still have me on board I'll be getting my post up ASAP! :D

Sounds great! We'll look forward to your post. Round three has just been really disjointed, partly because I juggled the list.

(Thunking forehead with heel of hand)

Oh and there was the matter of losing 6 weeks of posts.

And all the Yanks are playing with fireworks.

But we'll get the jive again and it will be great. I really like this chain.

Hey lookit - my post counter is up again. Somebody found some stuff.

Kristen, we started a chain of bloggers where one blogger would write a post about the post of the previous blogger in the chain, then refer to the next blogger who built on that post, etc. It is a continuous chain until it's complete. We completed two well organized chains that were lots of fun. (Towerkel's doing). Currently on round three. Check out quidscribis' blog - she's the keeper of the lists;)

They also located some of the lost posts on this thread and I think they're here: toward the end of the thread.

Could we remake this thread a sticky? And maybe name it AW Blogging chain or something?

Here's the old thread, retrieved from Google:

Towerkel:
Okay, here's the idea I posted in Dawno's Blogosphere thread. She told me to go ahead and start if I like, and I like.

Here's the deal. It's simple. We get a list of AWers who want to be part of the AWChain. The first person writes a blog entry, lets everyone know that their entry is up. The next person on the list has to take some element from the first post and blogs on it. Then the next person takes one element from the previous blog and so on. When we get to the last person on the list, they have to follow procedure by writing about something from the previous blog entry. BUT, they also have to incorporate some element from the very first blog, thus completing the circle.

After the round is over The first person on the list gets dropped to the last position and everyone moves up. The new first person looks at the Last person's blog entry and starts again. And the cycle continues. Confused?

Example;
Here is the player list;

Fred
Wilma
Barney
Betty
Dino

Fred blogs about his day at the beach. One of the things he mentions is the beautiful blue sky. He posts in this thread that his is up, with a link, and the name of the next person on the list, Wimla reads it and blogs about the fabulous cherry vanilla creme flavor of Blue Sky soda. Barney blogs about Cherry blossoms in his yard. Betty blogs about orange blossom being her favorite honey. dino blogs about his favorite activity, munching on honey flavored bones at the beach.

Round ends. List now looks like this;

Wilma
Barney
Betty
Dino
Fred

Wilma starts by going to Dino's blog and picks something out-- she blogs about deboning (bone) a ham. Barney blogs about last year's company picnic, where he hammed it up big for his boss. Betty blogs about her bossy sister's bad habits. Dino blogs about the nun's habit he swiped the other day. Fred blogs about the nun he had in grammar school who refused to eat ham sandwiches. Round ends, everyone moves up one.

Simple, right?

To sign up for round one; simple respond to this thread with "IN" and provide an URL for your blog. Please do so by Thursday, 8PM Eastern. I'd like to get this rolling for the weekend.

Also, if someone wants to join after a round has begun, they'll have to wait until the current round ends, then they will be placed "at the bottom" of the list. ("at the bottom" meaning at the bottom of the first list. So if they join in round 4, they'll be added after Dino)

One thing, try not to copy the previous post. If the post before you is about changing your own oil in your car, don't write about your experience changing your own oil. The point is to see how far out we can go, and then bring it back with the last person. (so, instead of writing about your oil change experience, you could write about the time you overheated oil in a skillet and it caught fire.)

I hope this makes sense. If there needs more clarification, or any questions, feel free to post them here.

Oh, and try to keep to your blogging style, if at all possible. If you normally blog several paragraphs, don't just blog two sentences for this project.

The reason I figured to have people post here when their blog is up is to encourage everyone to read all the blogs. It'll help to know context, and I think it'll just be a lot of fun. And don't forget to comment about posts (on their blogs, not in this thread.)

Towerkel:

Here is the list, to be edited frequently;

XThe NavigatorX:
We need ground rules for people flaking out or not being able to post. If Barney's appendix bursts, the whole chain stops.

Peggy:
Sounds like fun (and a good way to inspire my blog posting) - I'm in.

http://thoughtsontheroad.blogspot.com

Towerkel:
Well, I figured a round would take a day or two (depending on how many participants), and if you knew you would be home you'd have the courtesy to let us know via this thread. Can also opt out for round(s) if you know you're going on a trip w/o internet access and the like.

Or put in a failsafe-- if after 24 hours the person "up" hasn't responded, they'll be skipped. Won't be any name calling or pointing of fingers, we'll just squeeze them in if they come back before the round ends... I can easily monitor that.

Dawno:
Whoo Hoo! Great stuff Towerkel - and what fast responses to Round One. I'm really looking forward to reading all this.

MadScientistMatt:
I'll join too, using my main blog.

Jen.nifer:
Count me in, too!

KellyC:
I'd love to join in, but can I be assured I'll get gentle reminding when I'm supposed to get off my arse and post?

Towerkel:
As long as you remember to check this thread once we start, you'll be fine. If not, I'll personally send you a PM. How's that for service?

Peggy:
Would it work to have the blogger PM the next person in the chain when their post is posted?

Towerkel:
You tell me.

I'm game for it.

quidscribis:
In!

I think PMing the next person in line once you're done your post is an excellent idea. Especially since I'm also the forgetful type.

chaostitan:
IN!

http://chaostitan.blogspot.com/

KellyC:
LOVE that service! Thanks in advance

http://www.kellycurtis.blogspot.com

Sury:
I am sorry, I forgot to mention the participating blog. It's my writing blog: http://athomewriting.blogspot.com/

TemlynWriting:
I'm leaving to go out of town on Friday, and won't be back until the following Friday/Saturday (June 17). With that in mind, would I be able to participate in this round? I could be toward the end of the list, if there are enough people to last through to when I return.

If so, I'm in. My blog address is http://juliawrites.blogspot.com

(I'm in need of more regular updates, anyway.)

Towerkel:
Probably not. I suspect the rounds won't take more than 2-3 days (depending on the final count of participants). But, I'll add you to the list, and when you come back we'll squeeze you in to the current round.

BlueTexas:
Add my vote to the PM'ing idea.

Towerkel:
For the record,

I was never against the PM option, just in the interest of simplicity and to keep everyone informed I decided on the thread option.

I think we should do both, at the very least so that everyone knows who's "up".

And Quid,

I had hoped that the 24 hour window would be enough to keep our around-the-world members in the game. Should it be longer?

On every other screen, I've checked, and they were about 5, it shows up fine. Sometimes a bit dark. But never too dark, so it must be your settings.

Anyway, my post is up. Peggy is next. (I sent her a PM.) Go! Go! Go!

Yes, I've seen computers where it's difficult to read, due to not that much contrast, but on most it looks fine, next layout will be with more contrast again. Thx

An Idea
Here's an idea, don't know if it will work.

Instead of having the same people posting in response to the same people over and over (with only the top batter changing, moving up on the list). Why not shuffle the blogs at the end of each round.

Keep the original line up as a way to know who is on top next.

Example:
(first round)
A
B
C
D
(second round)
B
A
C
D
(third round)
C
A
B
D

Does that make any sense? The top batter would continue to be A, B, C, D on down that original line (and also whoever joins later) but the ones to follow (red) would be shuffled. Of course, there is the problem of figuring out how to shuffle and who would do it (maybe the first person of the next round could just do it at random--hat, eyes closed pointing, whatever) and then write the list here and on their first blog before the next round starts?

I noticed everyone has such unique and interesting styles. It would be fun to respond to someone different each time. Or if you happen to get someone you've had before, fine too.

What do you think?
__________________

That sounds like it's about to get very complicated. But it'd make it more interesting, as the order would change.

Yea, I was thinking about it getting complicated too. Especially once more people started joining. It would certainly make people have to pay more attention. And get friendly with more than their immediate before and after bloggers. Hmmm....

How about they always get switched? Like instead of B and then C it'll be first C and then B.. and D and E get switched and so on?

Good idea, have everyone get used to it first. I'm so erratic about reading blogs (there are so MANY). This will teach me discipline! To me that is first and foremost.

Towerkel:
Okay, Matt went yesterday, it's Jen.nifer's turn. http://www.jennifersando.com/

KellyC:
Thanks to Jen.nifer for giving me a topic I could write about! Mine's up -- http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/

jen.nifer:
Hehe, glad to hear that - I tried to mention a couple of things; I hoped it wasn't against the rules to blog about something other than chosen element...

KellyC:
I thought your's flowed very nicely - I think the point is to play "telephone" a bit. How does one topic relate to the next, etc etc.

Towerkel:
Jen, you did just fine.

quidscribis:
Kelly let me know she's done, I'm awake now, and I'm off to read and then write my own...

I'm done, and I've PMed chaostitan.

Wendelynn, I checked out your blog and attempted to comment on one of your posts, but can't. I'm not a member of Blogger. Did you know that you can open up your comments to people outside of Blogger and moderate them so no spam or offensive posts get through? I'd love to comment on your blog...

Wendelynn:
Hi Quid,
I thought that I had opened up my blog! Thanks for letting me know. I'll go tend to it right now.

Wendy

quidscribis:
Ah, yes, that feels better... Wheeeeee!!!!!

Thanks, Wendy.

chaostitan:
I've posted my part of the chain.

Wendy, you're up!

Towerkel:
wendy, don't forget. You have the task of tying Chaos' post to mine.

(here's the direct link to my post. http://www.dtkelly.net/?p=96)

Dawno:
I don't know if I'll have the time or talent to do this but I was thinking it would be cool to have a little button in the AWChain blogs that memorializes your participation - and maybe links back to this thread?

I hope you're all adding each other to your blog rolls as well

This has been wonderful and I hope Towerkel's rep pts are rollin' in

Can't wait to see round 2!

KellyC:
I thought this was a great exercise and it gave me a reason to post a blog entry. How do you make a blog roll?

Wendelynn:
The 1st AW Blogger Chain is now complete! Take a look at http://flyingshoes.blogspot.com

Towerkel:
I was fiddling. Is this the kind of thing you were talking about, Dawno?

If so, and someone else feels like making a better one (ie one that isn't crappy) feel free.

Okay, so the first link of the AWchain is completed, time for round two to begin. One rule to be added, but since most of you have done it already it shouldn't be too difficult. In your post, please provide links to the previous post and the next person in the chain, so that anyone following the chain can go either way along the chain without gong back to the AW page.

Don't forget to also PM the next person in line, as well as post on the thread to keep everyone up to date as to where the ball sits, so to speak.

Since TemlynWriting is away, we'll skip her for round two and start with Blue Texas. Kira, don't forget to take something from Wendelynn's blog entry to keep the chain going

Have fun, that's what it's all about.

*Edited because KellyC just reminded me of something I forgot.

KellyC:
I really liked it when there was a link referring to the previous post as well. I actually went through the chain backwards that way.

Hey guys, my technorati rank jumped a ton after that round. I'm not too sure about how that works, but my understanding is that it improves every time someone includes your link within their text, right? If it will help people's rank, I'm willing to post the complete chain, like some of you have. My blog is very narrow, so I'm trying to be careful, but if that is one of the things that improves your rankings, I'll include it.

If it's some other way of linking, please tell me that too. I still haven't figured out tags well enough for them to work when they're supposed to.

Please advise - thanks!

@Towerkel:
I think it's beautiful and not crappy at all But here's mine - oh so much more advanced:

@@@@@@@@@

Now, THAT's crappy!

quidscribis:
KellyC - linking to the other blogs also improves Google page ranking for the other sites. I'm no expert on how it all works, so that's pretty much the extent of the explanation you'll get from me. But yes, it does improve ranking for others. That's why I linked to the entire chain in my blog - I figured it was a nice thing to do. I wouldn't argue if others wanted to do it as well.

And Kelly, I love your chain - it's teh awesomest! :p

Towerkel, wonderful idea, and it worked very well, too, I think. Thanks!

KellyC:
Okay, cool - thanks for the explanation quidscribis (glad you liked my chain too

I will post the full list on my blog.

Also, this makes me think that mixing up the list would be good, because then you would have new people linking to you each time? (Tell me if you think my logic is wrong on this.)

Towerkel:
My only concern with scrambling the list every round is moderating who has had a turn starting and completing a chain link. Last thing I want to do is hurt someone's feelings because member A has been the last link 3 times, and member B hasn't had even one turn.

If this does not matter to anyone, I'll be more than happy to scramble the list, starting with round three.

KellyC:
Good point Towerkel, we'll have to play that by ear, I guess.

Hey guys, I formatted the Aw Chain lists so it indicates the name of the each blog (where I could find one.) You can copy my html if you want, for your posts (I'm feeling very smart!)

This is my attempt at a sidebar button:

I tried to draw a chain along the middle border, but I suck at pixel drawing.

I love both chain buttons, Towerkel and Peggy! I plan to use them both - one with the list that KellyC posted (another big thank you!) and the other down with my 'button collection' further down in the sidebar.

Now, for the html you can put "under" them to make them clickable - do we want it to link back to this thread? I'm going to do that on my blog - if that's what you want and don't know how to do the html, I'll post it in a bit.

eta: ok, here's the html to the button that I've posted above the list of the first blog chain blogs (Towerkel's):

Quote:
<center><a href="http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34458" target="new" title="AW Bloggers have written a blog chain - read it, join it!"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/Ebil_Librarian/awchain.jpg" width="80" height="40" alt="Read the AW Chain!" border="0"></a></center>

Now, I've hosted the picture on my own Photobucket site and I don't think there would be a problem with you hotlinking to it. That said, if you can host your own pictures, just replace the stuff between the <img src=> and </center> html tags with your own host site URL for the button.

The way I've set it up, when you hover your mouse a little popup title appears that says "AW Bloggers have written a blog chain - read it, join it!" You can replace that text with whatever you want to say - just edit between the quotes.

If you don't understand how to do any of it, just post in the Techies thread and one of the more tech savvy amongst us will give you the 411

I was wondering if that was the right thing to do. I'll probably update my template in the next day or two and add the link.

Gillian is on a distinguished road

If there's a round 3 can I join in, please? I am way out of date on *everything* because of an SF convention. I had the best fun time, but this is the first time I have been able to check AW since the Great Shutdown.

My blog is http://gillpolack.livejournal.com

Right now it seems to be mostly recipes.

SF and food are a pretty unholy combination, aren't they?

I designed the medieval feast for Conflux (since in one of my other guises I am a medieval historian) and before I even left the dinner people started demanding the recipes so they could make things at home. For the record, the most requests were for hypocras (alcoholic drink), which says *something* about Australian SF&F writers.

The oddest things give you your blogging moment-in-the-sun - my feastliness gained me a link on a national media site and people keep checking out those recipes.

And in a similar vein, I would like to step out of the next round.

It's been great participating in the first two!

I'd like to chime in that this was a great idea. I've found lots of new interesting blogs to read and it's given me incentive to get off my rear and post!

My entry is up, and MattScientistMatt was PM'd.

Ok, now, I think I got it. Ties the first to the last and round three is new and new and new!

Well, I will post later on. If something interesting in my life happens. That is actually worth posting about.

Thank you

But then, my spell-check gets confused about a lot of things.

Dawno:
Would someone mind helping me out? I'm updating links on my blog and I have the AW Chain on it - if someone would take a look at what I've got up and let me know if I've missed anyone, I'd be most appreciative...I'm getting a bit confuzzled about how this works - is the 2nd chain everyone from the 1st plus the newbies? How do I separate the two chains so they list correctly - or should I?

Thanks!

quidscribis:
Or you can go to my blog where I have all the chains listed...

Round One with permalinks
Round Two with permalinks
Round Three not done yet, so permalinks not yet possible

Hyperbole:
Thanks Quidscribis - I'll use your links!

quidscribis:
Anytime, hyperbole! It's what they're there for.

You know, I was just reading Forbidden' (http://infinitevanity.livejournal.com/)s and JudiS' (http://everythingindian.blogspot.com/2006/06/aw-chain-round-2.html)s blog entries and see that neither of you link to each other. I think even though you're addressing different subject from two different chains, you should at least mention the other blog as the first in the next chain or final in the last chain. That way you benefit from two links, like the rest of us.

I'm sorry I didn't figure that out earlier - I think someone asked. Sometimes logic escapes me....

Towerkel had this all figured out already. Guess that's why there are rules

Oh, you mean linking Chain 1 ender to Chain 2 beginning, Chain 2 ending to Chain 3 beginning, and so on? Good idea.

Um, that is what you mean, right?

Yes, quid - that's what I mean. Towerkel suggested we even tie the content from the last to the first, but we got all out of whack with the switcheroo (sorry). Just going back to add the link without connecting the content would at least keep the chain going without breaks. Theoretically it could be an infinite chain.

Also, I'm wondering if the first post in Round 2 got two links then. I'm not sure.

Just bugs to work out as we continue.

Okay, glad to know I did understand.

I think what I'll do then, as well, is link to Chain 1 from Chain 2 and so on and so forth within my own blog. To provide silly little links all over the place for anyone to track as they will.

But not right now. I'm actually working on a proposal...

Judi - the list you quoted is the round 3 list - we juggled it, which has caused confusion, I think. So you followed Southern last round, but this next round is all different (Although I see you're at the bottom again!) The juggle wasn't very scientific. If you'd rather be elsewhere in the chain, we can move you.

Everyone needs to take a look at the round three list so you have an idea when you're up. Also, please make sure you PM the next blogger, or round 3 will finish around Thanksgiving

My list might be odd because it's just html - I wrote it for people that wanted to cut and paste the list into their blog. I fyou'd rather have the hyperlinks for every list in the univers, Quid's got you covered at Peregrinas

Thanks for keeping this going.

FWIW, I envisioned each round being a link in the chain. so the last post of round two would tie into the previous post and the first post of that round. Then the first post of round three would tie into the last post of round two, this connecting the 'links'. and so on. You're doing fine.
