Hi all. I am a total newbie to writing. I have spent my entire adult career as a graphic designer, but I have always enjoyed writing. My only outlets being some marketing copy, my historical family Web site, my blog and some killer letter writing that always seem to get noticed in the Public Pulse (opinions) section of our newspaper.

The thing is, I have always enjoyed the written word even though I have never really done anything about it. So now that I am semi-retired, working out of my studio at home, I find I actually have time with my thoughts. So just when you would think an artist would pour it out onto canvas, I find myself brushing strokes on the keyboard.

So I found this little forum to learn a little more. I hope you will indulge me.

I'm so glad you found us. Good luck. What do you find you are writing?
Mostly my blog. But I was invited to be a writer on our graphic design blog.

I have been entertaining thoughts of beginning a short story just to get my feet wet. I have seriously thought about writing a historical novel based on my ancestors. I did quite a bit of research on the Colbert and Love families from the 1700's to the 1930's. The patriarch James Colbert was a historically significant trader that lived among the Chickasaw Nation during the colonization of the American Southeast and later the American Revolution. His sons were prominent players in the Chickasaw Nation and were negotiators with Andrew Jackson during their removal to the Indian territories.

I think that the stories of these families really bring a different perspective to the history of our country. I think this family is rich with interesting characters and stories.

Thanks Godfather. As much as I would like to help out on the logo contest, the professional graphic artist in me...cannot. (read why, and this)

But I am still glad to have found this forum.

Hi Vikia - are you sure you're not me? What you've written is almost exactly my experience, except for the semi-retired part. I do design out of my home office as my "real" job, so I don't have as much time for writing as I would like, but I'm fitting it in.

Welcome! This is a fantastic resource.

Hi, V. Have a drive around AW--it is full of interesting and helpful sections. Some are downright fun. Then jump right in. People here are willing to give their time to help anyone who asks for it, and to ask when they, themselves, need a nudge from others.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I am looking forward to making new friends and learning about writing.

For instance, I saw where someone asked about outlines. Does everyone use an outline to start? Or do you just jump in with "Once upon a time..."
