Suggest Alternatives to Title of Viceroy

If someone has the position and duties that we would associate with a viceroy, but was appointed by a Grand Duke or other independent non-King, what would be a suitable title?

I'd really like my character to be a Viceroy - the word elicits just the right response, but the "roy" part makes it a tricky fit with the other elements of the culture.

Suggestions? Could I get away with keeping it?

A viceroy is someone who rules on behalf of someone else, not necessarily of a king. Just as "prince" was once used to mean any sovereign--Queen Elizabeth I was in that sense a prince--so, I think, viceroy can be used for any such person (or vicereine, for a female) (or for a male viceroy's wife).
"Vicar" would be appropriate, too, except for its religious connotations.

Vicari would strip the religiousness of Vicar.

Say it really fast over and over again and it sounds like Reba Harry.

I think I'm gonna keep it - if every fantasy story was absolutely true to etymology, there'd be no words in common at all.

In my story, two such titles I'm using are Sgurr and Sron. These are Gaelic geographical terms; the former means "peak" and the latter means "promontory".

If I'm not mistaken, Gaelic terms aren't used very often, except perhaps in UK fantasy. However, I'm not using Gaelic words to be different - this just an example of how a trip to Scotland can influence one's writing.:)

One guess what my protagonist does when faced with the Armies of Lord Dharq...
